Wilber W. Caldwell is an independent writer and photographer living in the north Georgia ... His published works reflect the multiplicity of his fascinations. The contents spell out an interesting trip through American History from an interesting perspective, I look forward to reading. Just from contents, I am thinking perhaps we need a similar look at Welsh History, the left has moved ahead already in their cynical view of Welsh History via early Labour polemics to Llafur and to the contributors of Radical Wales today as the writter of the Blog Workingman's Blues:

The ConDem government is only a year and a half old. Since its inception we have had a referendum on the powers of the National Assembly, ...Attening events to commemorate Welsh Heroes or Battles, won or lost, once upon a time such was even 'De rigueur' with the 'Y Crachach Newydd' but the Cofiwn Rali Cilmeri 1282 - 1982 Commemoration of some 2000 Nationalists was their 'End Time' on such blatant expressions of overt Nationalism (Although they forgot themselves to commemorate Glyndwr 1404 in Machynlleth 2004). They quickly grew up and got good jobs in the budding and growing still 'Welsh Establishment' and now are moderate reformist 'Devolutionists' backed up with plenty of 'Dilettantes' of every description. Meanwhile 'Y Crachach Newydd' have been making sure 'Plant o'r Crachach Newydd' keep their eyes on the prize and it's not 'Back in the Day' of Pre 1982 Myth Making 'Dream Time', no they have eyes on the path left by Dad and Mam.
Today, at Rali Cilmeri you will find in main those whom 'Time Forgot' or 'Safe Nationalist Wales kicked into the Shadows, a collection of ageing 'Good Ole Boys' and declining numbers of 'Old Comrades' along with what Workingmans Blues called 'EDL/WDL types' aka Working Class Welsh Youngsters. Sure, I with hindsight critcise them as being 'Knee Jerking Super Patriots' and 'Nappy Rash Rebels' but certainly would not compare them with the EDL/WDL. For most part they are members of Balchder Cymru which I am also hughly critical of but am critical as means of focusing their attention on priorities and real politics rather than seeking to destroy them. They as much have a place in any number of Welsh Struggles as the 'types' I see at 'Left Events' in Wales, to my Working Class eyes and Pot Wash Patriot Revolutionary view full of Teachers, Social Workers and SW Students also clean faced well fed middle clas sixth formers in persuence of not revolutionary struggle but a day of fun smasing glass in London or otherwise carring out Libertarian 'Social Work', no doubt go down well on a CV for a budding Probation Officer sort?
So you see, I am not narrow minded when it comes to cynicism, particularly when it comes to 'Cultural Nationalism' and 'Y Crachach Newydd' who are as equal to the 'Old Labour Taffia' of South Wales that Rebecca Magazine regularly crucified as well as Free Masons but not then the dawn of the coming 'Crachdom Cymru. On which a book definatly needs to be done, until it is I advise all when considering these as well as 'WAGDOM' just see the film ZARDOZ if you have no time to read the book.

So, what of the left in Wales today, sure plenty to be cynical about there, the pacifists included. Pacifist 'Liberal Left' Cultural Nationalists really up for defending Epynt and Tryweryn but not Mynydd y Betws, why? Think 'Cymraeg Communities' and British Army, something to do with it maybe? and on matter of all things Military, Cultural Nationalism at drop of an hat will join the Anglo - Welsh Left to ramble up to Greenham Common, Faslane or indulge in much effort to oppose a Military Academy at St Athan or Nucleur Powr Stations in our far North. However, there are not many over identified as 'Welsh Issues' the Anglo - Wales Left would be involved in, as example the present campaign against the Windmilling of Wales by Renewables Robber Barons. Despite the argument being won that the Windmill Industry is a scam of an unholy alliance of Global Corporate Capitalism aka 'Green Imperialism' in cahoots with Green Environmentalist Carpet Baggers as FoE and Greenpeace both themselves Global Commercial 'Franchises' as much as MacDonalds or Star Bucks if the truth be known. Plus of course loads of Kids taken in by the Prophets of Climate Change, the mantra of a post Industrial Society 'Green Religion' or some say a 'Green Fascism'. Yes, I an cynical possibly comes with age or maybe with age comes wisdom, kind of seen it all before and I have.
I come from Working Class families, out of Southern Welsh Working Class Communities, so how I became a Nationalist in my late teenage years and from there became a Radical Nationalist ending up in jail. is one of those things? Still all these years later being very much the 'Adfywiadr/Resurgent' is possibly due to an over immaginative mind and too much heavy instead of light reading. Although of course, I am greatly inspired by experience of my class and labours in numerous Pot Washes in Wales, Dublin and London. Not least having a sense of what is fairplay and justice and despising exploitation but clearly being able to identify, empahsize and sympathise with my class and otherwise 'The Wretched of the Earth'. However, for much of the 'Sixties'I was far from being 'Left', I had become a Radical Nationalist and in many ways I guess what I would describe today as a 'Super Patriot'. Something told me not to go the way of some of my FWA/PF comrades towards the right, even far right but still I certainly had no time for the 'Anglo - Left' of those times. Made up of people, if not reading Marx would be into Tolkien whilst I was reading Gwynfor Evans and the Mabinogion. They reading the works of Ghandi and Martin Luther King whilst I had my head in the writtings of Grivas and Israeli Freedom Fighters and later of Malcom X. Whilst the Anglo - Welsh Left was concerned about the War in Vietnam, I would be more interested in struggles in Cyprus and Aden as I had been in much younger days more interested in the Hungarian Revolution and later the Algerian Struggle. The Student Revolution of 1968 was of little interest as by then we Radical Nationalists were well into our own very real 1968 revolution not as 'on lookers' but as participants. Our struggle was not just 'Class War', although of all 'Left' in Wales it's always Ian Bone who has really known the score and who I still admire most as a genuine 'Socialist Revolutionary'. Whatever, whilst a few of my 'sixties' comrades were rabidly 'Anti - Left' I was just cynical and critical without thinking too much of the politics. It took months in prison reading some good books out of the Prison Library but then two years exile in Ireland to learn about 'Socialism', the 'Socialism' of James Connolly, James Larkin and Scots Socialist John Maclean to begin my journey to the left, not yet fully arriving at my Socialist destination. In main because, I am from time to time considering getting off the train as it keeps hitting the buffers of what can only be a 'Knee Jerking Super Socialist dead end'. A 'Socialism' that believes in nought but it's own percieved/concieved 'truths' as being correct both politically and which ever else suits they not seeing beyond, still 'Student Politics', their heads too are often stuck where the Sun does not shine.
No more so when it comes to the Windmilling of Wales, why the 'Anglo - Welsh Left' cannot see certain truths and realities about the Renewables Big Business' defeats me. What do they fear, if they admit they are wrong and admit they have been fooled and pretty stupid their whole World might fall apart? Perhaps it's time 'Welsh Socialists' were told a few 'Home Truths' as for example the pacifist preachers who supported the cause against Franco were doing so out of opposition to Catholicism more than being for a 'Red Spain'. Like wise, same 'Welsh Methodism' was behind hostility to Basque Children having refuge in areas of Swansea Valley, as for a Welsh Welcome, not in Brechfa for Basque Children:

All ancient history now, but what is not so and still an history being made is the struggle against the Renewables Robber Barons. Whatever, reasons and arguements the Left might want to imagine as excuses not to be involved in the March Into The 'Mountain and Struggle' To 'Save Stryveland' in June. They can have none not to be involved in the Struggle against Windmill Farms on England's Crown Estates in Wales nor first and foremost a Socialist Struggle that neds to be waged against the Duke of Somerset of the Beaufort Family to make more vast profits out of his holdings in Wales, next time on Mynydd y Gwair. I suggest that this becomes a 'Cause Celebre' for the 'Anglo - Welsh Left' as much as Greenham Common, Faslane and any number of 'Left Causes' you parade around London for? So, in June hopefully at least a few 'Anglo - Welsh Socialists' will be raising up a Red Flag over Mynydd y Betws and Mynydd y Gwair or otherwise my 'Cymric Cynicism', I will save some of it for the so called 'Wales/Welsh Radical Left' and that for sure includes in particular the Plaid Cymru Left of Leanne Wood 'Renewables Queen' who as DET also takes advice from CAT CORRIS, how interesting?
