LAND & LIBERTY: DEFEND THE LAND AGAINST ALL EXPLOITERS inc Windmill Plantation Profiteers.

.
TIME TO RAISE UP THE 'RED PITCHFORK' BANNER OF POPULAR PROTEST, this time in defence of our land against Cheque Book Conquest of Cymru. Who is to own Wales? the Land Lords of old or the new would be the Lords of our Land, big business profiteers? We have had the Anglo - Norman Medieval Robber Barons and later wealthy Anglo - Welsh Land Enclosers. We have had our land taken for Forestry's and British Army Training Grounds, and of course not least reservoirs. Now they want our land for Windmill Plantations, time we stopped this land grabbing. Support Rally against the Windmilling of Wales at Hyddgen on 20 June 2009 at 12 noon. SEE FURTHER INFO BELOW:

TOLPUDDLE MARTYRS COMMEMORATIONS: But What About Merthyr 1831 Commemoration On Similar Scale?

http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=0h&oq=&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4ADBS_enGB317GB206&q=tolpuddle+martyrs+commemoration

.

Question Begs To Be Asked, why is it the Left in England are so up for commemorating the Tolpuddle Martyrs in such a big way. But in Wales we all but forget the 28 plus Working Class Martyrs of the 3 June Massacre outside the Castle Inn during the Red Week 1831 Insurrection? No plaque, no mural and no commemoration, why?
.
See earlier Posts for further information on radical workers leader Lewis Lewis and the Hirwaun/Merthyr 1831 'Red Week' Insurrection. Industrial Heritage body 'HERIAN' goes a bundle on the Chartists but forgets Insurrection 1831, I wonder why that is? Why don't you ask them!

SPANISH CIVIL WAR WELSH INTERNATIONAL BRIGADE VOLUNTEERS MEMORIAL CATHAYS PARK CARDIFF.

.
Working in London, in catering as a Kitchen Porter, I worked with people from all over the World. Most were youngsters lucky enough to be enjoying the fruits of their grand and great grand parents struggles for social and eonomic justice. Few realised or really cared about such things, after all this is the age of the MTV and McDonald's Kids Birthday Party generations. However, most were OK! who can deny them their youth but I must say that I found working with young people of the 'Third World' more interesting.
.
Unfortunately most modern youth are all well down the road of consumerism, but I was never so shocked as to just how far some do not have respect for past struggles, as when I started up a conversation with a young Spanish lad. I had brought up the Spanish Civil war, and was about to make him aware of the Welsh contribution when he quickly retorted...''That's my parents problem, not mine!''...and walked off, totally disinterested in any conversation about the Spanish Civil War. Hopefully, that was just one isolated sad example of completed Youthful Indifference and selfishness really, but somehow I think it sadly might be a majority view?
.
But then there was a period of my early teenage years when I might have appeared to be the same as that 'stroppy' young Spaniard who so obviously implied that the past was the past and he only cared for the future. Whatever, it got me thinking, what's it all about at the end of the day? Pretty sad for all those who give their lives for noble causes as for Spanish Democracy, I hope this does not make anyone feel despondent and despairing for the future of any worthy struggles!

MAY DAY 2009.

.
I just did a search of the Web for info on May Day 2009 events in Wales, unfortunatly very little happening. It does not look as if Calan Mai blog has been able to move things forward any, nor are there any attempts to at least organise a traditional Celtic Beltane Fire Festival but what there is plenty of, is Prince Carlo Hi-Jacking this Celtic and Workers day for his own self promotion as a ''populist prince'' with an overwealming onslaught of green fascism! Is that taking it a bit too far, then maybe 'Green Imperialism' would be a better term to use, especially in a Colonial Cymru Context. I suggest if you have not got a Celtic or a Workers May Day to attend, then attend one of Carlo's Green Days to protest at, and ask awkward questions. See link below for details of Carlos Campaigning Green May Day.
.
In the mean time note I still consider that Swansea has a better claim to being location for a National Wales May Day Festival, for reasons stated in earlier post, that being because it was in Swansea 1793 that the Workers had the first major revolt in Wales. Whilst in 1796 Swansea workers again rose up and held a mass march on and around Swamsea, this prompted great fear amongst the bourgeouise of an ''Insurrection'' as in America and France, sadly not to be, but still annually worth commemorating. Whatever, have a good and happy Mayday and do not forget raise up your red flags.

As a Post Script, note that personally I am pissed off with all Political Parties and consider that what Wales needs is something akin to the Italian Lotta Continua and 'ASKATASUNA' Basque Libertarian Movement with a touch of the Black Panthers and Radical American Indian Movement.

CHARTIST COMMEMORATION 18 APRIL 2009 IN MERTHYR TUDFUL; An 170th Anniversary. Report Dated 23 April 2009.

.

.

The Merthyr even was excellent, nice sunny day for the street theater and my congratulations to 'Chance Encounters' for their theatrical interpretations on the street and inside the meeting hall. Historians Joe England, Huw Williams, Les James also made an excellent and interesting contributions and later debated the virtues of the Peoples Charter, issue of physical force over constitutional means. Not least of interest here was the failure of Merthyr Chartists to give any full and meaningful support to Monmouthshire Chartism and the Rising of 1839.
.
Appreciative thanks must go to other contributions made by Uact2 with presentation 'Sounds like Chartism' also Cor Cochion Caerdydd. Not least thanks to Viv Pugh of the Dic Penderyn Society for setting up 1831 exhibition at Merthyr Library, if others made same effort in producing and presenting such Workers History Exhibitions in their local libraries and Community Centres then Welsh Working Class history, not least of Popular Struggle might gain an higher profile than it does at present in public mind and a fading memory of our peoples history.
.
I had to leave before the days events concluded with a workshop on ''The Legacy - and into the future'', mores pity as I would have liked to have made a little contribution to discussion. The legacy of Chartism of course may be seen in many ways, but as for the future, I cannot fail to comment that whilst people benefited long term from the Chartist Struggle, unfortunately it led toward a British Road to Socialism or now we might say the end product of Blair - Brown New Labour.
.
It's not my purpose now to discuss the benefits, failings and faults of that British Road or of the Labour Party in the years from 1849 to our present day. Suffice to say if we are to establish another popular Peoples Charter, lets remember that the Chartist slogan of the period being commemorated called for a ''CHARTER FOR ENGLAND'', I say it is now time for a 'CHARTER FOR WALES'. May that then be a 'WELSH SOCIALIST CHARTER', possibly providing for a platform and umbrella for a future Democratic Progressive Socialist Movement of the left in Wales. I somehow have the feeling that the Tories might be back in power post next BGE, and that also possibly the Tories might make in road advances to increased power within the National Assembly.
.
As for the future, if PLAID goes into a political retreat, I can see that it will revert to a main presence in rural regions North and West and then remain more or less a largely rural cultural nationalist party representing old and new Crachach. Keep in mind PLAID is quite capable of Coalition with Tories and Liberals, thus a 'Left Alliance' might serve socialist struggle better and not least in defence of People against Tory rule from London and possibly from in Bae Caerdydd too?
.
Time will tell? Whatever, if you want to attend the next Chartist event and involve yourselves in a new Peoples Charter you may do so on the 16 May at Llanidloes Community Centre, I urge one and all to support the Chartist Commemoration by attending this event, this time organised by Llafur - Welsh Peoples History Society. To conclude, I have a number of photos of the Merthyr event which I hope to post up soon.

RED REMEMBRANCER REFLECTIONS On 1969 2009 - 40 Years On! Did We Get It Wrong?

.
Reflecting on how come an ''Hwntw'' from Merthyr and many other young Valley lads and lassies become Welsh Nationalists in the ''sixties'', rejecting the Labour and Socialist Traditions of their Forefathers and Mothers. From Households that read the 'Labour Paper' The Daily Mirror, to take up reading the Western Mail and consuming ideas that would make them 'Cymric Conscious' and not anglicised and acculturalised victims of ''Cerebral Colonialism'' aka ''Cultural Imperialism''. However, rather oddly whilst many of my rather ''Lumpen Proletariat'' Brothers and Sisters fully embraced Cymric Culture and learnt Cymraeg and imbraced the arising new ''Cultural Scene'' of Dafydd Iwan et al & etc, I did not. My 'Welsh Identity' was forged by becoming aware of Welsh History and Politics, indeed by reading the Western Mail as it made me aware of my Country and all about it, as regards contemporary news, people and events.
.
I made a poor 'Language Learner', although I took action to ensure my three daughters learnt Cymraeg and thus three of my four grandchildren today speak Cymraeg, I was also never struck by the new Cymraeg Music scene nor English Pop Music. Instead, it was American Music I favoured, my Father introduced me to such as Bing Grosby, Perry Como and Nat King Cole et al and my Uncle to Bill Haley and Rock & Roll, my first two records were Duane Eddy's 'Ring of Fire' and a Little Rchard E.P. Throughout the ''Sixties'' my struggle had the Sound Track of Motown and Beach Boys. Today, I am listening more to my Fathers 1930's & 40's music, and given the Economic Depression we are heading into it seems the right kind of sound track in these hardening times, in particular Bing Grosbies 'Buddy Can You Spare a Dime'.
.
40 Years ago today 26 February 1969 I was arrested with eight others, imprisoned and eventually tried for Public Order Offences that related to the Organisation, Training and Arming the Free Wales Army. The outcome of which I and two others, FWA Commandants Cayo & Coslett were sentanced to further terms of Imprisonment, this final episode took place on 1 July 1969. Somewhat ironically whilst these events were taking place at Swansea Crown Court, many miles North at the same time in Town of Caernarfon Charles Windsor heir to the English Throne was being Invested in Castell Caernarfon as Prince of Wales, much is disputed about this history, and not least about the FWA and the way it demised not only in that trial of the ''Swansea Nine'' but by fact that the two aforementioned FWA Commandants and Volunteers caught up in this trial brought the FWA to an end itself by a kind of formal surrender. For all on trial, apart from myself were asked to sign a declaration to effect that we would never engage in such Military Activities against the English Crown and State ever again.
.
The fact that my fellow compatriots so signed this declaration could have made me very bitter and turn against them, but what the hell it was all over anyway, we were imprisoned and 'Carlo' was crowned Prince of Wales. So there was not about to take place a Pro & Anti Treaty type ''Civil War'', not least because there was no real FWA worth talking about as an organised Military Force. The FWA then as today, at least in a web ''appreciation'' form was in main a kind of symbolic form of radical nationalist resistance, if not an actual for real Armed Movement of National Liberation. See my blog: ALTERNATIVE WELSH NATIONALIST MOVEMENT & STRUGGLE Hist Archive also you may be interested in another of my blogs, a creative one: THE ASSYRIAN ROD Alternate Welsh History.
.
As for myself, I was but an erstwhile FWA Volunteer, caught up in the ''Sixties'' radicalism but far from being on the left as was the mood of the time, many of us young radical nationalists were for the most part Anti - Left and thus Anti - Socialist. Just how come when born in Merthyr Tudful with family on both sides being of Mine Worker backgrounds and traditions (Father from Gilfach Goch), both sides of my immediate family were Labour but betime I was old enough to become Politically conscious, I was rejecting Labour but not neccessary Socialism. Although I had no time whatsoever for the Anglo - Welsh New Left, nor the ''Student Revolts'' of the time. At same time, I had little space for Plaid Cymru ''Progressives'' other than old WRM 'Radical Republicanism'', Plaid Pacifism and all the CND stuff was totally beyond the pale to my young Radical and Militant Nationalist thinking.
.
I had started to become a Welsh Nationalist in the latter years of my Secondary Education, but upon leaving School and taking up work in a number of areas of South Wales as Bridgend, Maesteg, Neath and Gorseinon I gravitated away from Politics. Those early teen developing years was more concerned with 'twisting' and other ''Sixties Style'' dancing around Dance Halls in the Neath and Swansea Valleys, the good old days when girls danced around their Handbags and remained sober, the boys too, did not get too drunk but after few pints, a game of Darts or Billiards turned up at the Dance Halls for the traditional 'Inter Valley Tribal' punch ups. These were the ''battles'' of those teen years, from Ystradgynlais to Ystalyfera, from Maesteg to Gowbridge, good old Welsh Tribal ''warfare'' was the order of the day.
.
That came to an end when I moved to Somerset to take up work in a weaving mill, and it was there I witnessed a reawakening interest in Welsh Nationalism, possibly because I was living and working amongst the English. I have since spent many years in London working amongst the English (and in latter years many other peoples from all over the World who are resident in London), and it would be untruthful to say that the English had anything as such to do with my becoming a Welsh Nationalist. Far from it, over the years working amongst the English, Irish and many other ethnic groups has made of me with they a 'Brother of the Ox'. It was whilst working in Somerset I took out a subscription to the Plaid Cymru News Paper, 'The Welsh Nation', and soon by reading this paper and in particular about the Tryweryn Struggle, I was really motivate to return to Wales.
.
Soon I did, and as soon as I could called in at the Plaid Cymru Office in Caerdydd, to join what was then the Welsh Nationalist Party, it is at this time I met Pedr Lewis, an ex WRM I member who had also been imprisoned in association with a Bomb attack close to the Elan Valley Reserviour in protest about Elizabeth II turning up in Wales shortly after her Coronation in 1953. Pedr Lewis became my first 'Political Mentor' and it was from he, that I drew upon Welsh Republican Ideas and an interest in Irish Republicanism. Pedr had been in Jail with Irish Republicans and was like they also of Militant Mind, Pedr also was no freind of Plaid 'Cultural Nationalist' Leadership or leanings. In time I was introduced to another Welsh Republican Nationalist, Trefor Morgan another mentor in my Political Education.
.
At about the same time I had hitch hiked to Pwllheli to meet a man who was in these times and still is a Patriot I admire and regard of great signifigance and consequence to Wales, the ''Sixties Struggle'' and personally someone I will always regard as a 'Welsh National Hero', that is Owen Williams. He was to introduce me to a from of Nationalism, that whilst not exactly ''Right Wing'' was not in sympathy withSocialism but then Anti - Political in general, best described as a Radical Cultural Nationalist. That ideology I was never to fully take aboard, either in its soft or hard form but rather it has always moved me to recognise that it has within essentially such that can be 'bought out' or used, as it has been by the 'Crachach Newydd' - England's Contemporary Client Tribe in Wales. Althought the likes of Owain Williams, Niel ap Siencyn and Emyr Llew of Adfer could never be accused of pandering to that form of ''Sell Out'' Cultural Nationalism, I doubt if todays CYMUNED would either, nor Llais Gwynedd.
.
However, at that time 'Cofia Dryweryn' was to play an important part in my political development, and move me toward more Militantism and eventually lead me towards finding myself associated with the FWA as were many working class lads in both the Industrial and Urban South as well as in the Rural and Agarian North and West of Wales. Pivitol in this was the influence of Irish Revolutionary Nationalist History, and most important to the bringing together the various strands of the then developing Radical Alternative Welsh Nationalist Movement and Struggle was the 1966, 50th Anniversary of the Dublin Easter Rising. Hundreds of Welsh and other Celtic Nationalists attended the Commemoration, my Brother and I went over for the week, enjoyed ourselves agreat deal, learnt a lot and made many freinds and later to be, useful contacts. Dublin 1966 is possibly as much a Political milestone for ''Alternative Nationalism'' as was 'Cofia Drywerin' and Rali Cilmeri and later 'Merthyron Abergele.
.
The FWA membership were not of the ''Student Revolt'' or, of the Anglo - Left or has it took shape in Wales, as the Language Struggle of a Pacifist Cultural Nationalist Language Struggle, such I have always considered to be in many ways a largelly Middle Class Struggle similar to that of Peoples Democracy in Occupied Ireland also Femminism and Gay Rights as Anglo - American in basis in the Middle Class elements of those involved. The FWA I have always seen has having more in common with the IRA and ETA in basis and class make up to some degree. Myself however, was more of Political mind than FWA Commandants Cayo & Coslett, Cayo was considered to be a Fascist for being pro - Franco and Spanish Falange, although Cayo's Nationalist Politics came from having an Anti - Communist Polish Teacher at the Public Shool he was sent to. Coslett was, well a Patriot, largelly a Cultural Nationalist but with some ''Left Leanings'', after all he came from Llanelli, his Grand Father in Law was the famouse Spanish Civil War Blockade Runner 'Potato Jones'. So how could Denis not have a touch of red in him, like myself, even at that time.
.
During the ''Sixties'', and yes, I guess I am a ''Victim of the Sixties'' I had began to do a lot of Political Reading, anything Political that came my way, be it of the Left or the Right, I collected and consumed Politics but with a particular growing interest in the Radical Political Nationalism of the Quebec Liberation Struggle, Flemish Struggle and also of Black Panthers and Native Americans. At same time I was well into reading books about the struggles in Palestine/Israel and Cyprus also Malaya and later Aden, as for books the ones that left a lasting impressiom were Orwells 'Homage To Catalonia'. Steinbecks 'Grapes of Wrath' and 'Graham Greens 'Power and the Glory'. Not least any Welsh History and particularly then Medieval Welsh History became an all consuming passion of mine and still is.
.
Another important figure in my life was to be Toni Lewis, another mentor but particularly Toni taught me how to be creative Nationalist. Toni was not overtly Political, he was another mainly of simply Patriotic persuasion but of all Radical Nationalists I came to know in those days, I guess it's the truth that Toni was to the ''Far Right'' often to a point where I would tell him to ''get off'' that particular boat. However, Toni was too busy a patriot and too much a Welsh Nationalist to allow or have time to let certain Right Wing views bog him down and divert him from a truer and the more noble cause of Welsh Freedom without the ''Racist Baggage'' with which English Nationalism carries around.
.
It was under the 'Mentorship' of Toni that I moved more to the Politics and stepped back frtom the FWA, as Toni and I founded the National Patriotic Front in time fed up with FWA going no where, we concerned ourselves with establishing a Political Organisation, the NATIONAL PATRIOTIC FRONT out of which came the Rali Cilmeri, the beginnings of a later COFIWN but most of all it was the NPF that Conspired, Plotted and Planned the Anti - Investiture Resistance Campaign. Not being an actual for real FWA Volunteer in 1969 but having attempted to organise and train with an Anti - Investiture Insurrection in Caernarfon in mind, I was guilty as hell but still the truth of the matter is at least five of the nine arrested on 26 February 1969 were really arrested for being organisers of the Anti - Investiture Struggle, I now refer to as the Adfywiad'69. Thus to my mind the FWA Trial 1969, should really read the ANTI - INVESTITURE CONSPIRACY TRIAL, the conclusion of which was to be an end to our ''Sixties Struggle''.
.
So whilst Carlo went his merry way, never to become King but nevertheless he has remained that 'unacceptable' English Prince of Wales, and for 40 years I have at least never accepted this 'Status Quo'. However, over those 40 years my Politics have changed and they changed rather quickly following my release from prison, mind you nine months in Prison allowed for much reading time, and Prison Libraries were not too bad in containing good books. But it was the two years I spent in an ''Irish Exile'' working as a Kitchen Porter and later Grill Chef in Dublin that I met Socialist people, Left Sinn Fein, Trade Union Socialists and even a Scottish Anarchist Lady who were to point me in direction of the Socialism of James Connelly. This was at time just prior to a renewed armed struggle in the North and Civil War between the Left official SF/IRA and Traditional SF/IRA, that I had witnessed radical revolutionary activities and action taking place in Dublin and in other Irish Cities and Towns. In main struggles aganist the bosses and landlords, against the Cheque Book Colonisation of Ireland and other forms of Exploitation, not least the destruction of Georgian Dublin by developers.
.
These were exciting times but as matters became dangerous with bombings and assassinations, the Irish S.B. paid me a visit and warned me to stay out of Irish affairs. From that moment I was regualarly visited and checked up on, and told by my local News Agent that the Dublin S.B. had me also under ''Secret Surveillance''. Thus stay out of Irish Politics I did under threat of being sent packing back to Wales, which at the time such may not have been a good idea to give them the opportunity to do so. However in time I did return, in 1972 to found with Toni Lewis the National Commemoration Association later with inspiration from Eurig ap Gwylim, the NCA became Cofiwn. The NCA/Cofiwn was an idea I picked up in Ireland from attending such historical Commemorative events as the Wolfe Tone Bodenstown Rally.
.
My brother who had always been more left than I after visiting me in Ireland had been influenced to start up a Welsh Socialist Vanguard which later advanced with others of the left as Meic & Cris Haines and later with Idwal Dyer, an Independant Socialist and the Libertarian Anarchist Ian Bone of Class war, to form Cymru Goch I. This pioneered the way for the WSRM and Cymru Goch II, and not least all of whom were to put the 1831 Merthyr Insurrection back on the historical map, by making it the centre of annual left Commemorations in Wales. Reflecting on these times, it is a big what if? I and others had ''gone left'' earlier back in the ''Sixties'' would things have turned out any different, as maybe by paying more attention to history of Merthyr 1831, the Scotch Cattle and 1839 Chartists Revolt in Newport on to learning more of Tonypandy 1910 and Llanelli 1911. Might this have motivated us more to establishing a Popular Armed National Liberartion Front rather than the Free Wales Army, maybe with then a progressive National Democratic Front our ''Sixties Struggle'' just might have taken a left turn for the better? Who knows?

TRECH GWLAD NAG ARGLWYDD ETO! Whose Country That Is The Question, we must call for Land as well as Liberty!

.
It is not a matter of ''Our Country'' but rather 'WHOSE COUNTRY?' how can we ever engage in a struggle for Welsh Freedom and National Independence, if we do not at the same time struggle for 'LAND AND LIBERTY'. We are well aware of how our land has been taken by the builders of Reserviors, the Planters of Forests and creators of National Parks and not least the many acres occupied by the English Military Machine.
.
But how much
else do we know about the 1000's of acres owned by Foreign Lords, land largelly stolen in the conquest of 1282 - 4 and thereafter. James Connelly had much to say on this matter about Ireland and it's struggle for Freedom, and I remember well in my two years of 'Irish Exile' (1969 - 72) that the struggle was renewed on such issue on a campaign platform opposing 'Cheque Book Conquest' and 'Who Owns Ireland'. Such similar I consider to be a Cymric Campaigning priority to be Discussed & Debated but then organised asap this year hopefully?
.
Of course 'Land & Libery' Struggles have been going on for some time, no more so than today with the native peoples of South America, and Chile in particular at present. All this and below in mind I feel we should be considering a Welsh 'Whose Country' LAND & LIBERTY Struggle, think about it! All ideas and information welcome, as for kicking off such a campaign, I suggest MAY DAY - BELTAIN or on Awst 1 Lughnasadha, traditional day for Celts to walk into the mountains would also be ideal but where or wherever there is a need to rise up the RED PITCHFORK and blow the Horn of Liberty in rallying call to Action.

.
I suggest search of Web for 'Land (&Liberty) Struggles today, not least in South America.

One of Britain's richest men has been given nearly £300,000 in taxpayers' money for letting a footbridge be built across a riverbed. Protesters yesterday hit out at the payout from public money to the Duke of Beaufort, who already has a £130million fortune. The footbridge across the River Tawe in Swansea - given to the duke's ancestors by King Charles II - links a new shopping centre with Liberty Stadium. Council chiefs needed the duke to approve an "easement order" for the project. The £281,431 payment - which includes legal costs - to the duke. The Duke of Beaufort has been paid more than £280,000 of taxpayers' money for allowing a footbridge to be built across a Welsh river. The duke's ancestors were granted ownership of the bed of the River Tawe as well as fishing rights by Charles II more than 400 years ago. He is entitled to the money as "easement" for the bridge, which links a shopping centre to the Liberty Stadium, home of Swansea City football club and the Ospreys rugby team.Duke of Beaufort owns a section of River Tawe's riverbed and is entitled to a sum whenever bridges are constructed over it."The duke, with a fortune estimated at £130 million, is the 581st richest person in Britain, according to The Sunday Times Rich List. THE LEFT: UP FOR DISCUSSION & DEBATE The New Radicalism, if any worth speaking of?

.

.
This book would have Ian Bone in a fit but still worth a read, my copy is falling apart now but I had a quick scan through it's pages to remind myself of it's content. Yes, summed up by blurb below, all of which makes me think would it not be a real red rage to see Robert Griffiths of the Wales C.P. and Ian Bone of Class War with Bethan Jenkins Plaid A.M and one time member of CYMRU X a Red Youth Faction within Plaid Cymru have a discussion & debate on the future of the Radical Left in Wales - does it have a future? Maybe a possibility during 2009 Merthyr 1831 Insurrection Red Week Commemoration next year, a suggestion, for others to propose and organise.
.
Somewhat a little connected with the New Radicalism of the sixties was of course later Armed Revoltionary Organisations such as, The Symbionese Liberation Army, Weather Underground, Red Brigade, Red Army Faction and the Bader Meinhof Group, an account of which has just been released as a dramatic film. I have not seen but re
view in the Independant News Paper was none too thrilled. Whatever, check it out on the web or/and go see at Cinema or wait for DVD release.
.
We may consider, that if MUDIAD AMDIFFYN CYMRU ha
d not been brought to an end with capture of it's leader John Jenkins in November 1969 may it have gone on to be as violent or develop left perspective as aforementioned groups or perhaps ETA. The answer to this may be fourthcoming in a new book FREEDOM FIGHTERS - The Forgotten War by John Humphries to be launched at the Japan Room, Wales Millenium Centre on 20 November 2008 at which John Jenkins himself will be present no doubt to sign books and answer questions too perhaps. Of course MAC did not survive to become a Welsh ETA but there did come into existance for a short while WAWR - Workers Army of the Welsh Republic and later Cymru witnessed the ARSON WAR of MEIBION GLYNDWR.

BRWYDR PONT LLECHART: Who Owns Wales?

.
See below, material photo copies of a protest at Pont Llechart, obviously someone sent me this material for my archive but I cannot remember who or what the protest was about. I have searched the web and have found out where Pont Llechart is but can find no more information but suspect it is possibly something to do with a Right of Way issue and the English Duke of Beaufort's ownership of land in the Swansea Valley (and else where in Wales). I have been told that this English Lord is now going to sell or lease land for Windmill farm on Mynydd y Gwair, I note there has been some campaigning for a few years on this issue and that the matter is at moment becoming a hot issue again. I am at present engaged in some research on WHO OWNS WALES? I began this endeavour earlier this year with a visit to Mynydd Bach, Ceredigion where I symbolically raised up a Red Pitchfork flag to commemorate the peasantry and small holders who fought for their rights in Rhyfel y Sais Bach - The War of the little Englishman 1826. The Pitchfork being a symbol of rural revolt, I thought I was first to use this as a symbol to adopt and use in contemporary popular struggle. However, I was wrong because upon going through my archive, I found the material below, including use of a Pitchfork on a protest poster. Great, I suggest it's time that the Red Pitchfork flag was now raised upon Mynydd y Gwair which I hope some one will do very soon and send me some photos please. Also all and any information on Brwydr Pont Llechart will be appreciated.

NEWPORT RISING 4 TACHWEDD 1839: A Foto Tribute 2008.

.
Most certainly Newport does not ignore it's history, there are a number of excellent sculptures in the town connected with folklore and history also not least wonderful sculptures on theme of the Newport Rising 1831 (see previous posts in this blog) also a wonderful set of murals depicting scenes from this 1839 Workers Insurrection. If only Hirwaun and Merthyr would do similar in connection with the regards to Insurrection 1831, the only memorialising I am aware of is the plaque on the town library largely memorialising Dic Penderyn. Why not something to memorialise the Castle Hotel Massacre of 3 June 1831? In further connection with the Newport Rising 1831, I draw your attention to an excellent article in Llafur Vol 4 No 4 Wales's 'Unionist Nationalist': Sir Thomas Phillips (1801 - 67) by Cris Williams. Phillips as Lord Mayor of Newport ordered English Soldiers to fire on Welsh Workers, he was later to become an hero for Victorian Middle Class Liberal Cultural Nationalists and at the Millennium was voted a ''Welsh Hero'' by Newport Tories. Phillips was not the only example of such ''Cultural Nationalists'' at odds with Welsh Workers. So too was D.Lleufer Thomas one of the founding members of the Dafydd ap Gwilym Society, if my memory serves me correctly, he was a magistrate at trial of Miners during the Tonypandy 1910 riot trials. I believe that he thought much of the problem was down to ''Drunken Young Men'' from outside the community, over the coming year I shall give 1910 and 1911 much more attention and hopefully assist clarify more on all this difficulty between Liberal ''Cultural Nationalism'' and Socialism. In the mean time on 4 November or during this week, if possible do lay floral tributes at the Newport Rising memorial. To conclude, two question begging to be asked: Why are the Scotch Cattle Workers Secret Defence Organisation not remembered, memorialised or commemorated as much as the 'Rebecca Rebellion'? Further, why remember Dic Penderyn but not Edward Morgan? Think about it and discuss it and maybe lets do something about it, yes! Watch this blog for some action in this direction.

A NATIONAL MAY DAY EVENT FOR WALES as from 2009?

..
Somehow do not think that one great ''National'' May Day event in Caerdydd or else where (I suggested Abertawe for reasons given in an earlier post) will work out well. Personally, now after my Commune 1871 Field Trip to Paris recently, see earlier post, think all Radicals might best serve their purpose and aspirations by supporting attempts to build up the annual Hirwaun & Merthyr Insurrection 1831 Red Week Commemoration 28 May - 5th June. Given the association of May Day/Calan Mai with largely rural celebrations and customs, taking into consideration then the history of 'Rural Revolt' in Cymru as the Corn Riots of the late 1700's and early 1800's (read book, Before Rebecca by D.J.V.Jones). I am of the thinking associate such with the rising cost of food in Wales plus more importantly to bring to the attention of one and all, the famine crisis amidst the 'Wretched of the Earth', our Brothers and Sisters of the Ox.
.
Thus would it not be a rather more appropriate May Day in Wales to hold as many local actions of Popular Protest on these issues. I suggest that on Calan Mai we rise up all over the land the Red Pitchfork of Peasants Revolt, possibly outside Super Markets or where ever, all ideas and suggestions welcome. I would be quite happy to see the collective behind CALAN MAI/May Day Promotion blog take this aboard if they so desire, as I am not in position to organise on any great scale. Anyway, think about it and note I am not labouring point about any national May Day event, I will go along with whatever thought best, but do consider an annual Red Pitchfork Popular Protest on and about May Day/Calan Mai has having virtue. I welcome all views and opinions but do note I am away from home base PC at moment and thus am not able to send out or read inward emails. But be back to home base by end of this month, so time for one and all to chew the fat on my above suggestions.
.
Afterthought: 2009 is 100th Anniversary of the Great Cardiff Castle ''Patriotic Pageant'' of 1909 which with the Investiture of 1911 were the years of a Welsh Edwardian high noon that would reach it's deadly dusk in the 1914 - 18 Great European War. The 1909 ''Patriotic Pageant'' in mind, why don't we hold a great PEOPLES PAGEANT 2009 in Caerdydd, if interested get in touch early August this year, in mean time think it over re how best to organise, fund and what form this Peoples Pageant should take and where it could be held. I will write up more on this in due course, you could also look it up on the web. Whatever, we could make this the really big rallying of radicals in Wales next year, so please all ideas welcome, myself I would be interested in helping to organise presentation of a Peoples History of Wales down through the ages. Think on it, but think on associated events and fringe activities as well.

It is here annually on or about 28 May there is held an annual commemoration, unfortunately because of unforeseen circumstances I could not get over to Paris in time for the commemoration. I finally arrived a week later, to pay my respectful homage to memory of the communards, in a show of solidarity between Merthyr 1831 and Paris 1871. A fuller report and more fotos are on line but at the moment, I am still on a bit of a summer break away from major blogging. In time, I have 100s of Paris fotos to sort out. So where does Heads of the Valleys Initiative Regeneration go from here? Expect WAG to fill a begging bowl or maybe Gorden Brown will deliver, that will be hoping. The Regeneration Appraisal Documents has been done and delivered, the Conference held and Huw Lewis AM has got a few Sound Bites out of it on TV and on the Radio. But what next? Sit around and wait for a miracle, meanwhile Merthyr continues to get slagged off as a ''town of slackers'', time to prove just how mistaken everyone is, not least the pessimist pundits of the media. Lets get an ''Act Together'', and that act is a plan of Socialist Self Will and Self Advancement led by the same Spirit that witnessed the workers and people of the Heads of the Valleys rise up in 1831 against all odds, to make a stand for Liberty and Freedom from Tyranny and Oppression. Today the people at the Heads of the Valleys must focus aspiration and inspiration on and around a great International Welsh Socialist Festival, a major long weekend or even week long event of many activities from Merthyr to Hirwaun, and including Aberdare and other communities in the valleys of Glamorgan. Now do not sleep on this start seriously thinking about it, all of keen interest meet during Insurrection 1831 Red Week 2008, first week of June and discuss, to begin with many of the ideas and initiatives in this R.R.Blog. That will be a good start, just take it from there but whatever, make a start in direction of Self Help and collective community action.

MAY DAY WALES 2009 & BEYOND. Calan Mai Cymru Calls For Cardiff Event

.
I dedicate this post to the 'Llansamlet 12' ...Run Lads Run!!!! 12 Llansamlet Copper Workers who had been imprisoned, escaped and go on the run, see WANTED POSTER dated 1820 reproduced in the National Archive, link here >http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/humanrights/1815-1848/doc-tradeunion-image.htm . Their ''Crime'' being 'Combining' as a 'Trade Union' for the purpose to raise wages. I have not had chance to research further, wonder if they got caught, anyone know?
.
Post Subject: MayDay 2008 « Calan Mai International Workers Day in Cardiff 2009. « A call for Calan Mai 2009 · MayDay 2008. Whilst there was no noticeable marking of Mayday in Wales this year, ...calanmai.wordpress.com/2008/05/12/mayday-2008/ - 11k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this . Excellent source of radical information but as for the call for, what I perceive is a call for a ''Welsh National'' May Day event in Caerdydd, it leaves me cold. Not that I do not support the idea of marking May day in Wales, but as soon as I seen the call for it to be in Cardiff, I sighed! Just got to ask, why Cardiff? The ''Bosses'' City, the Capital of Cymric Capitalism in the 19th century, a city built on the sweat of the workers, and today a ''Cymric Crachach Capital''.
.
I do not wish to appear too negative, so may I suggest an alternative, but first let me say if all things were perfect I feel it would be far better for one and all to focus on holding May Day events activities in their own communities, rather than centralise in one locality. I have made similar arguments about celebrating Dydd Dewi, not that I do myself but consider it best an event taking place in numerous communities rather than being being centralised in Cardiff as a ''National Event''. Though, I do see the need for a ''National Event'' and have suggested that the ''National Event'' is only held in Cardiff when 'Dydd Dewi' falls on a Saturday. Other than that far better if one and all just concentrated on their own community concerns. Apart from such reason, I am opposed to all this ''Cardiffcentricism'', and if one looked beyond the City limits one would find a wider Wales pretty much ''pissed off'' with what is perceived as this Cardiff treating that ''Greater Cymru'' as some kind of ''Internal Colony'' to a Euro Empire City State.
.
Having said the above, my preference as being for Community May Day events - even what might be organised as a MAY DAY OF COMMUNITY ACTION, possibly next year 2009 outside Supermarkets, the biggies as Tesco et al. Why! well by next year the matter of food, and feeding the ''Wretched of the Earth'' and our own growing poor at home will be a bigger issue than it is now. However, if it is really felt the most priority of things to have a MAY DAY event, to be in some International 'Line Dance' on the 1st May, I can but again ask the question Why Cardiff? WHY NOT SWANSEA? My case for Swansea/Abertawe is not only a matter of saying Cardiff you can keep Dydd Dewi ''National Event'' but let Swansea have a May Day ''National Event''. No, I am not a ''Swansea Jac'' and this is not a member of any ''Jac Army'' speaking.
.
My case for Swansea rests on both reason and history, much of the reason I have made known above but I also remind that Cardiff's got the National Welsh History Museum, and traditional largely rural Calan Mai events and activities will be held there over the years ahead. You can guarantee they will be big and well publicised and be a big alternative draw to any May Day event in Cardiff, on the other hand do keep firmly in mind that Swansea is home to the NATIONAL MARITIME and INDUSTRIAL MUSEUM of WALES (Please keep in mind Sailors were as much workers as Iron Workers and Miners). Further, I happened to be in Abertawe for the May Day bank Holiday and visited the Museum and took a look around the Marina, despite being a nice day, the Museum and Marina was not exactly swamped with people, tourists or locals. Thus the point is, that not only is there potential in using a large foyer space in the museum for events and activities, not least exhibitions and stalls for a major May Day event but also it's a Museum worth visiting and taking children to. There is also an huge amount of outside space, toward Town there is a green often used for various events as Maritime Festival but also around Marina there is much space as there is in streets close by, these are streets without heavy traffic.
.
If the purpose of any May Day event is to grow, then also note that in this Maritime Quarter is the Dylan Thomas Centre, and there is a small theatre near, plus close by Swansea Museum. If the purpose of a ''National'' May Day event is to be ''Family Friendly'' as well as have a ''political edge', then a May Day Parade through town could be held with a concluding May Day Rally some where in the Maritime Quarter but then I would hope that any May Day Festival would get a bit ''Lighter'' with various festivities as outdoor music, street theatre and so on. On the whole given the size of Cardiff as compared to Swansea, I also think that a May Day event would make a bigger impact in Swansea whilst just being lost or out of the way, what in the Bay (again) in Cardiff.
.
Having said all that above, as the big ''Swansea Sell'', to continue, now the history as to why Swansea and not Cardiff is my personal preference. The years 1793 - 1835 are important years in history of working people in Wales, as is well recorded in the book BEFORE REBECCA Popular Protest In Wales 1793 - 1835 by David V.W. Jones. Part one of this book is titled as Pre - Industrial Unrest, nevertheless in chapter 1 Corn Riots in Wales 1793 - 1801 we see an emerging Industrial Working class arising to struggle, not just on behalf of them selves but also for their communities. Yes! we also see demands for higher wages and the beginnings of Trade Unionism but at this point in time, of our own post Industrial Society here in Wales along with a growing global concern about food, there are echoes with this 18th century ''Distant Mirror''.
.

.
This year we have witnessed throughout the world food shortages being the cause of food riots, so too in Wales particularly over the years 1793 - 96. Most major Welsh Towns in these years were centres of Corn Riots, but one event stands out in terms of popular protest and of organised workers action that maybe also marks a key moment in Working Class history in Wales. This took place in Swansea on 4 February 1793, on this day many months of unrest and protest in the town came to an head, 100's of Copper workers and others from neighbourhood of Llangyfelach marched on the town. This event stands fourth as an epic account of Workers and people involved in collective action of civil protest with an organised purpose of putting grievances before the portreeve and magistrates of the town gathered at the Guildhall.
.
Any Swansea May Day event could hold a May Day Parade from the present Guildhall, through Town centre to Maritime Quarter, to commemorate these events of 1793. The Civil Powers at the time felt the matter was well out of their hands and feared the Workers and people might take power within the communities of Swansea, and thus appeals were made to William Pitt to send in the Soldiers. So they were and in no short time the Second Regiment of Dragoons occupied the ''effected areas''. History of Swansea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In the same year, workers from all the copper works in Swansea went on strike ... In this early part of the 19th century, the area which is now Brynmill, ...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Swansea - 65k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this
.
The following years 1794 - 75 in particular witnessed widespread corn riots throughout Wales, it is a matter of conjecture if the French were drawn to possible good prospects in Wales, that led to their disaster at Garregwasted on 22 February 1797. Unfortunately for revolutionary hopes popular protests had declined by 1796 into 1797 but by the end of the decade the discontent was kicking off again, no where more significantly so than in Merthyr Tudful (am I glad I was born there and not, Caernarfon? Thanks Dad but a special thanks to Mam, Merthyr born and bred!). 1800 - 1801 was to see in Merthyr Tudful the beginnings of what would make this town and it's outlaying Tai un Nos Townships ''Workers Barrios'' the Revolutionary centre, maybe we could call it the ''Revolutionary Capital'' of Wales. The Popular Protests and Disturbances in Merthyr in these years would come to a dramatic conclusion in September 1801 when a major riot broke out, the riot was all but the Rising Merthyr was to witness in 1831. That the riot of 1801 was something beyond the usual can be seen in records of the time, in which ''the powers that be'' seriously feared a workers insurrection throughout the South. As with 1831 it was a major military occupation of Merthyr which brought and end to a potential Merthyr Rising 1801, still the consequences were 50 arrests and imprisonments, with the ringleaders being taken to Cardiff Jail.
.
However, Merthyr defeated is not Merthyr conquered, against continuing establishment fears of Workers Insurrection, an address by an ''anonymous author'' at the time was circulated around Merthyr and it's 'Barrios', the address warned ''...the price of necessities had reached such a level that the workmen on the hills had decided on a revolution against 'Tyranny and Oppression', and the revolt was to take place on either of the two following Sundays''. Obviously written by a revolutionary optimist way ahead of the right time - to seize the time! However, 1816 was not too far down times road and neither was 1831! I will conclude here and suggest you read the aforementioned book that I have sourced for this information. REMEMBER THE PAST TO BUILD THE FUTURE - EDUCATE TO BE FREE! But best of all remember the imortal words of workers leader Lewis Lewis outside the Castle Hotel on the 3 Mehefin 1831.....''Shoot Back Boys! Shoot Back!''
.
.
No! I am not making a case for Merthyr Tudful to be venue for a May Day ''National Event'' with that town being venue in time lined up for a major 1831 INSURRECTION RED COMMUNE COMMEMORATION during first week of June. it being only a matter of time before this proposed ''International Event'' gets it's act together, as well as the Peoples History Museum proposed my Huw Lewis AM. So, I will stick with the previous alternative suggestions I have made, keep May Day local and community based but if it really thought a must that a ''National Event'' is held, every time I would favour Abertawe to Caerdydd. But having said that I would support what ever is decided upon as the best outcome, I conclude by reminding that, it is as important to remember not alone the rising of the Red Flag on 31 May 1831 on Hirwaun Common but most importantly not forget the massacre that took place in Merthyr on 3 Mehefin 1831. I would not for one moment distract from the Haymarket events of 1886 but for the fact to emphasize the point that, perhaps thanks to the 'Weathermen', the Haymarket Martyrs have an excellent memorial. However, the 28 Merthyr Martyrs murdered on the 3 Mehefin 1831 have none, and this event was left unmarked until I placed my own temporary memorial there, which survived a Saturday night and lasted out the week (see pic below). Unfortunately, I will not be able to do same this year, as I shall be in Paris for the Commune 1871 Commemoration. Maybe others can make journey to Merthyr to raise up a loaf of bread on a pole with of course the Red Flag, at place I self styled & dedicated as PLAS 3 MEHEFIN 1831, this is all fully informed on, in previous posts in this RED REMEMBRANCER blog.

Post Script: For a wonder full Radical Red Rememberance Weekend outing with freinds and family over the coming end of May Bank Holiday, get out of the Cities and try some countryside in and around Pentre Penderyn and Hirwaun. MERTHYR TUDFUL REGENERATION & RESURGENT: The Eureka - Ballarat Way?

Merthyr Tudful is keen for some positive regeneration and progressive resurgence, and why not? but hopefully they do not ''throw the 1831 baby out with the bath water''. I have heard a few people express the oppinion that images and talk of Red Flags and Revolution, is hardly the way to brand a town in the 21st century and it does not exactly inspire confidence in capitalist investors. This of course is a mistaken view, and Merthyr should be more than just proud about the stand made in 1831, for it was against tyrrany and oppression and the flag raised was for liberty. So Merthyr, should not just have immense pride in this history but boast loudly about it far and wide as does the City of Ballarat in Austrailia regards a similar insurrection that took place there in 1831, see website links below.
.
But we do not have to go as far as Austrailia to see a City really proud and boasting about it's Insurrection, I mean of course Newport Rising 1831, the council over the years have errected a number of statues, placed history markers plus seen created an excellent mural. Merthyr Tudful, as far as I know has a plaque placed by voluntary effort on the Library, oh yes! there is a Weatherstone pub named after Dic Penderyn. Newport has a John Frost Square does Merthyr have any streets named after those who participated in the Merthyr Rising? Possibly they do, so please inform if so ok! also correct me if I have ignored other markers of the Merthyr Rising 1831. I am aware of the excellent presentation of the revolt at the Museum at Cyfarthfa Castle, and no doubt if Merthyr gets the Peoples History of Wales that will also tell the story of 1831. You will also note that any sense of regret about the Paris Commune in the Paris District of Montmarte has long been abandoned, so to regards America's forgotten Civil Revolts as the Shay's Revolt and Whiskey Rebellion, see link > The Whiskey Rebellion - Friendship Hill National Historic Site The Whiskey Rebellion took place throughout the western frontier. However, of more comparative relevance is the Eureka Stockade Rebellion at Ballarat in 1854 which for many decades was a source of embarrassment to this growing successful town moving towards becoming a major City of Victoria State, Austrailia, see link > Eureka Stockade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Eureka Stockade was a gold miners' revolt in 1854 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, against the officials supervising the mining of gold in the region ...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eureka_Stockade - 84k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this. Rethinking Regeneration in the valleys In the last five years ago I have heard many derogatory things said about Merthyr - "it's like Beirut, the best have left, the problem is their attitude, why don't they get on the train to Cardiff" etc etc. I also have seen the Heads of the Valleys programme, announced nearly 4 years ago, full of good intent but with not enough money or action on the ground it has achieved little other than a mess in the town centre and the threat of a Status Quo concert in the park in the summer. So, I have put pen to paper and written a pamphlet - Rethinking Regeneration: the Heads of the Valleys. I hope it will put to rest the insulting myths that swirl around the chattering classes of Cardiff and generate some real commitment to improving matters. It's being launched on 12th May at Merthyr College Theatre 4 p.m. - there will also be a 'question time' with local AMs and MPs. It's free too but you need to register in advance. The pamphlet will be available there or you will be able to download it from our website.
And, if you want more of this kind of thing, then you should JOIN the Bevan Foundation because that is the only way we can raise any money.

CHARTIST 1848 COMMEMORATION 2008. A Postscript To Previous Post.

The Very Salt Of Life: Welsh Women's Political Writings from Chartism to Suffrage. Honno Classics. Edited by Jane Aaron and Ursula Masson. An excellent must have on your shelf book. Although for my purpose in this post, just want to draw attention to Part One: Chartism, Nationalism and Socialism, three essays for you to consider, they being 1: Members of the Blackwood Female Patriotic Association, anonymous Chartist address to Henry Vincent. 2: Jane Williams, Ysgafell. Remarks on the Blue Books 1848. 3: Agusta Hall, Lady Llanover. An address to the Women of Wales. Also see the Introduction to this Part One by Jane Aaron. Just a brief comment regards writting 1: references within show clearly the identification of the writter with British Chartism and links to Bristol and Bath more than with Towns in other parts of Wales. In this same connection it should not be lost on us, that in 1831 there was also a major Insurrection in Bristol > Bristol Riots - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Bristol Riots of 1831 took place after the House of Lords rejected the second Reform Bill, which aimed to get rid of some of the rotten boroughs and ...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Riots - 29k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this These riots having as much impact on ''Monmouthshire'' as the Merthyr Insurrection of that year, indeed English migration into ''Monmouthshire'' at this time pulled it closer towards the ideas about trade unions and Chartism, ideas generally coming out of England into Wales. I suspect that Penderyn and Hirwaun were witness to more ideas coming out of Ireland, certainly as well as the Ceffyl Pren rural justice experience of West Wales migrants into Southern Industrial Wales in the 1820's on into the 1830's and beyond.

CHARTISM 1848 - 2008: 160th Anniversary. Whose Legacy? Discussion & Debate For May.

.
Adam Price Plaid MP kicked off a debate, of which you can read via this link > Grounds for Plaid to claim Chartist legacy - icWales Clearly Vincent and the other Chartists had not thought through in any detail the implications of what a Welsh republic would be like and how it could ...icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/.../2008/03/31/grounds-for-plaid-to-claim-chartist-legacy-91466-20695102/ - 41k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this . I have already commented on this in a previous post in this blog, now in this post I am encouraging continued discussion and debate on this subject and related matters of Socialism and Nationalism, not least in a Welsh Historical and contemporary context.
.
However, as important I hope this D&D will very much be a commemoration of Chartism in Wales on 160th anniversary of 1848. I can find very little going on in Wales re actual commemorative activity, nor for the 40th anniversary of 1968 - a year of revolt, not without connection back to 1848, in respect to all ''home countries'' of the British Isles and most of Europe. In a nutshell, Adam Price claimed Chartism as a Plaid legacy, hotly disputed by Labour Party in Wales. Adam raised up a Welsh Republican Flag as a Chartist Flag but in reality, a proposed Welsh Chartist Flag was Green, Blue and White, as picture below. This flag was designed by Hugh Williams, see my comments in Flags of the World Web site below. Note my mistaken reference to Hugh Williams being bueried at Llangennech, this is now corrected, he was bueried in the cemetery of St Ishmaels, near Ferryside. Go on a summers day and the road to the church gives you an absolutly fabulous view of the Towy estuary over to Llansteffan in Sir Gar. See pics below of the grave of Hugh Williams, not too hard to find, following entry to the Church turn left and go up the slope to side rear of the Church, close to trees at this back end of the cemetery, you will not miss it if you keep the fotos below in your mind's eye. If you have a family, Ferryside will make a great day out for the kids. Note you can get there by Bus and Train but will have a long walk to St Ishmaels if you have no car.
.
.
I place before you this information on Hugh Williams, although do look up other Welsh Chartists as John Frost. I have picked on Hugh Williams as one man who lives through the period under consideration, personally touching on all the key episodes in this key period of Welsh History, a decade 1839 - 1848 that will shape and change Wales forever, prefoundly so and which makes of our country what it is today, in particular politically. 1848, is a cross roads, as much as 1839 was, although 1848, set much in stone and the story of Hugh Williams will very much present a picture of this. I have not had much opportunity to study the life of Hugh Williams other than in reading books as the classic The Rebecca Riots by David Williams, UWP Cardiff 1955.
.
In Hugh Williams one sees a young radical but having read the inscriptions regards he and other family members, in English on the grave stone, I could be forgiven for believing much else. It appears that Hugh Williams was to become as many ''Young Radicals'' of the 1840's, the ''Hungry Forties'', in old age very much in the Welsh context a successful part of the rising Victorian middle classes. Here, I keep in mind what Proff Ifor Wilks has said about the 1839 Newport Rising, ''When the smoke of the Soldiers guns had cleared, the Welsh Middle Class were to realise which side of their bread was buttered''. At this point I draw attention to the infamous BLUE BOOKS of 1848, not alone in suggesting that this is more the legacy to which Welsh Nationalism, Plaid Cymru in particular owes much to, and not Chartism. Of course there is nothing wrong in a contemporay ''Plaid Left'' wishing to identify with Chartism and Vincents ''Welsh Republic'', this was siezed on my the Welsh Republicans of WRM I, not least by Harri Web and the later Proff Ifor Wilks. But historically, British Political Reformism and later Chartism is more a British - Welsh Legacy, myself whilst not rejecting this British - Welsh Political Reformism, nevertheless look back more to Lewis Lewis, Lewsyn yr Heliwr, and the struggle for popular liberty and natural justice began on 31 May 1831 with the rising up of the Red Flag on Hirwaun Common. Full information on, you will find in previous posts to this blog.
.
My judgement of Hugh Williams does not give a complete picture of the man or of his radical beliefs and career, for more information, read aforementioned book also see outline in > The National Library of Wales :: Dictionary of Welsh Biography Hugh Williams is important because of his connections with the Chartist ... Well that's it, hope you have found all that interesting but more hoping it sparks of a good D&D, and that it resolves much for the better? It is interesting to note that Chartist activity in Merthyr in 1848 witnesses a poster being published calling for a 'CHARTER FOR ENGLAND', hhhmmm!!! wonder where Wales fitted into the thinking here! This is how it was with Welsh Radicals, they were often politically of an ''English Mind''. In earlier times even ''Welsh Republicans'' as Iolo Morgannwg and Morgan John Rhys thought in ''Anglo'' Political terms and wished to see a 'Brtitish/English Republic' established. Welsh Radicals of these times were far from being as ''Nationally Minded'' as Irish Republicans or for that matter Irish Socialists. Whatever, maybe much of this could be discussed during MERTHYR RED WEEK 1831 - 2008 COMMEMORATION, unofficially or officially, if some one in Merthyr cares to organise a suitable meeting place for a ''live'' D&D Session on who has the right to claim the Chartist Legacy?

MAY DAY GREETINGS, Remember 31 May 1831, Our Other Red Flag Day In Wales.

.

.
RED MAY REMINDER, on 28 May 1871 The Paris Commune falls, see previous post. Forty years previous workers in area of Pentre Penderyn and Hirwaun were about to rise up in what becomes known as the Merthyr Rising. On 31 May 1831, Merthyr Chartist Thomas Llywelyn comes to Hirwaun, the previous day he had spoke at an huge Chartist Rally at Twyn y Waun Common. He was hoping to hold a similar Chartist Reform rally on Hirwaun Common under a White Reform flag, however militant workers more concerned with ''natural justice'' than ''political reform'' had other ideas. The ''natural justice'' radicals as Lewis Lewis, Dic Penderyn and others however, had their own plans and after seizing the white reform flag, they sacrificed a calf (local tradition speaks of a lamb) and bathed the white Reform flag in it's blood. This Red Flag became their Flag of Liberty over tyranny and would lead them forward seeking ''natural justice'' from the oppression and exploitation of Iron Masters and their lackeys. By 1 June, the workers had established ''Armed Positions'' in the ''Barrios'' of Heolygerrig and Cefn Coed, by 2 June marching on Merthyr, the militant workers and their radical leaders soon raised up the populace in revolt - WELSH INSURRECTION 1831.
.
The next day outside the Castle Hotel in centre of Merthyr, a large crowd had gathered and at about 12 Noon, Soldiers guarding a meeting of Iron Masters and Town Bourgeoisie opened fire. When the smoke had cleared some 28 people lay dead, this should be a date made more known and annually commemorated as the 3 Mehefin 1831 Merthyr Massacre. Over the years since, particularly in our own contemporary times there has been much focus on the matter of Dic Penderyn, a Martyr yes, but it is now more accepted that he did stab the Scots Soldier Donald Black. It has become a matter of a rather misguided ''Political Correctness'' to focus on Dic Penderyn and ignore Workers Hero, Lewsyn yr Heliwr who has been generally condemned to the shadows of Welsh History. Further, largelly ignored and forgotten is the heinous and murderous crime of the Merthyr Massacre that took place on 3 June 1831. See previous posts and note in particular my calling for fitting 31 May and 3 May memorials and annual commemorations. For reasons stated in previous post, I cannot do much myself this year but I hope others will, there are annual events in Merthyr organised by the Dic Penderyn Society, so it would only be a short step to also gather at site of the 3 June Massacre to say a few words in remembrance and lay flowers for the 28 people shot by the soldiers that day. Do note the terrible massacre of Communards following fall of Paris Commune of 1871, the French state carried out vicious revenge on the insurrectionists, excellent histories on web about these events. Idea/Suggestion: Why not have Merthyr link with Monmarte district of Paris which was main area of the Paris Commune of 1871, someone in Merthyr, why not suggest to your Town council. Do let me know if this idea moves forward, see link >>>Montmartre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Montmartre is a hill which is 130 metres high, and also the name of the surrounding district, in the north of Paris in the 18th arrondissement, ...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montmartre - 45k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this
.
Other than this I would like myself to focus more here on how to mark occasion of 31 May 1831, regards remembering rising up of the Red Flag on Hirwaun Common. I have said much about possibilities in this connection in previous posts. So here I am going to focus on another possibility, if there is no official commemorative gatherings. Quite simply but only if there has been a prolonged period of good sunny weather to dry the common. You could organise your own RED FLAG 1831 RAMBLES on Hirwaun Common, even have RED FLAG 1831 PICNICS at some suitable locations on the Common. Do consult maps on the web for foot paths, of which there are a few and they are marked, you may also want to contact the nearest Ramblers group or/and Tourism Information Office for further Information. Do dress for the occasion and wear good walking shoes, and take flasks of Soup and food of course. If your visiting Hirwaun, note it has a number of Inns plus a god cafe, I believe there are restaurants in the area too. If intending to organise a larger commemorative gathering, I have noted in previous posts best place to hold such with car parking space close by, if however those who wish to park in Hirwaun itself, note you can walk or march from the town to the common (see google maps). Hope that's helpful, have a good day with purpose to promote this important date and event in Welsh History.
.
Below I make further tribute to the Hirwaun Red Flag, by posting up unpublished fotos of my attending closure of Tower Colliery earlier this year. Very windy day.

Indirectly connected to above is later Chartist History, not least of 1839 Newport Rising and 1848 "Year of Liberty" aka "Spring of Nations", of which 2008 is 160th Anniversary. 1848 is also of course important in Welsh History regards the infamouse Blue Books which is very much connected to events of 1848 and 1839 in a number of ways. I shall be dealing with all these matters in a number of post features in The Welsh Patriot blog at http://welshpatriot.blogspot.com/ about mid May, certainly before I go over to France for the Paris Commune 1871 Commemoration 2008. At moment just want to touch on a recent controversy that came out of recent pre election PLAID (Cymru) conference in Newport. At this Conference PLAID M.P. Adam Price presented Plaid members with a ''Chartist Flag'', in fact it was a Green, Red and White Welsh Republican Flag, first used by the WRM 1949 - 1959, a version of which I have made for 1797 Garreg Wasted Commemorative purpose and occaisionally I have raised it at Anti - Monarchist protests. The Chartist flags, were either in first place (1830's) a white Flag and by 1848, they had adopted a Chartist Republican flag which was a Green, Blue and White Flag, as pictured above.
.
.
Adam Price went on to claim that Chartism was a PLAID legacy, this caused Welsh Labour to respond by saying it was "their legacy", and I must agree with them, as to why see previous posts in this blog's earlier posts. Suffice to say here, that Chartism does lead to British constitutional reform, rise of British Trade Unionism and eventually the very British Labour Part.y. Adam Price went on to describe what his ''Chartist Tri-Colour'' meant, what the Green, Red and White stood for, I want argue with that description, sounds OK to me. But If anyone of a patriotic mind wants to lay claim to a true historical Welsh Flag of Liberty then it must be the 1831 RED FLAG.
.
Same to regards these events of our 19th century history associated with both popular struggle and the the rise of what Proff Gwyn Alf called ''Primative Socialism'', then it is the event that took place on Hirwaun Common on 31 May 1831. Not least in this connection our Political Hero to lay claim to would be Lewis Lewis, Lewsyn yr Heliwr the ''Primative Rebel'' and Radical Revolutionary Worker hero and not Thomas Llywelyn, the Political Reformer. He, if I remember correctly did a ''runner'' during Merthyr's Red Week and took no part in this Welsh Insurrection.
.
In all this connection coming up in future posts, I shall explore further Welsh Chartism history and Rebecca's Rural Revolt, begging answers to the questions why do we remember Rebecca but tend to ignore the Scotch Cattle? then why do we remember Dic Penderyn as a Martyr but not Edward Morgan? Then what about Sir Thomas Phillpot, Lord Mayor of Newport in 1839, who ordered the Soldiers to fire on the workers, but in 1848 becomes defender of the Welsh against the ''Shame of the Blue Books''. Ironically, Sir Thomas Phillpot and the Llanover Circle as proto Political Cultural Nationalists are more of a PLAID Legacy, true? yes! In recent times, Newport Tories have declared Sir Thomas Phillpot their hero whilst condemning the Welsh Left's Chartist Leader John Frost. Then there's that "Man from the Alamo" and the matter of John Humphries disagreeing with Ifor Wilkes on their separate interpretations of the 1939 Newport Insurrection. Such are the many confusions, contradictions and convolutions of Welsh History, myself I say take what you like and run with it, if the shoe fits and why not. So Adam Price did nothing particularly mistaken or wrong, nor more so than most Politicians and even historians when it comes to interpreting history, I could give you loads of examples in any History not least our own.
.

Next flag to rise up is the one of ''Peasants Rural Revolt'' on Mynydd Bach, Ceredigion on some suitable and appropriate anniversary date. I will keep you informed and provide information on posts on history of Peasant revolts and land wars, in the past and present, keep viewing this blog. Plus I got to get around to making this flag as well, no one else will? will you? The more the merrier for making good impact on Mynydd Bach, I spose it in a little way kind of as some contemporary present signifigance regards the Nationalist Rural Revolt in the North (& West?) mostly and ironically from within Plaid Cymru much due to the consequences of it's coalition with Labour in the Welsh Assembly. Such is Welsh Politics, getting as Confusing, Contradictary and Convoluting as Welsh History.

PARIS COMMUNE 1871 COMMEMORATION 2008 Plus Information and memo re our own 1831 Commemoration 2008.

.
I might miss out on any Insurrection Hirwaun/Merthyr 1831 Commemoration this year as I am hoping to go over to France for the annual Paris Commune 1871 Commemoration. I say hoping as all attempts thus far to get a good package deals are being stacked up against a cheap trip by ''supplements'' as evidently it's a busy period in Paris. I had been hoping to do it by train straight through to Paris but now it may be by bus/car and ferry? My purpose in going is one of treating myself to a break but also to do some history foto research for this blog plus study up on the commemoration. Whatever, any one else out there that wants to attend these commemorations note these travel problems and sort out your travel arrangements well in advance ok! Anyway, for further information on the commemoration, click this Paris Commune 1871 Commemoration Web Site link >>> L'actualité de la Commune - 09:45- [ Translate this page ] L’Association des Amis de la Commune de Paris-1871 a mis en place des commissions, comme l'avait .... It's excellent, in time we need same for a proposed major INSURRECTION 1831 COMMEMORATION ANNUAL FESTIVAL Web Site. However, do note that apart from my blog there exists a Dic Penderyn Society Web Site advancing information on Dic Penderyn, 1831 and an annual Merthyr Commemoration they have been organising for many years, see via this link >>> Dic Penderyn Society These were the last words of Dic Penderyn (real name Richard Lewis) who was one of 28 men and women tried on charges connected with the Merthyr Rising. ...www.alangeorge.co.uk/dicpenderynsociety.htm - 26k - Cached - Similar pages - Note this .My efforts in the main are to inform more on Lewsyn yr Heliwr - Lewis Lewis heroic leader of the Insurrection and promote commemorative activity at Pentre Penderyn and Hirwaun prior to the main Commemoration in Merthyr (Red Week) and at possibly Parc Cyfarthfa? This year with my planned trip to Paris on horizon, I cannot actually organise anything over at Pentre Penderyn or Hirwaun, so I advise make most of the Bank Holiday weekend. If it's sunny treat yourself to a ''Socialist'' day or two out in the country side, noting that The Lamb Pub has a Beer Garden, if weather's good this will be great for you and any children you take on a trip into some Welsh Socialist history. Whilst meandering about Pentre Penderyn think on the following idea, why not like minded people work towards establishing there something similar to the Appalacian Socialist HIIGHLANDER FOLK SCHOOL - Research & Education Centre, for further information, see via link >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highlander_Research_and_Education_Center . Seems to me a pretty good idea, what do you think? If interested in getting involved in setting up a working party to look into this initiative, contact me via g.apgruffydd@ntlworld.com . PRIVELLEGED POLITICIANS POSH NOSHING: If Ever One Photo Could Move Us To Reviving Class War Cymru - This Is it?

.
Amidst all the D&D about Assembly A.M's Wage Hike, the below photo and associated feature turns up on front of the WM TV Mag 8 - 3 - 2008. Essentially the feature is about how much English Lord Dafydd Ellis Thomas likes to stuff his face at least once a week with posh nosh curry. This feature is about a bit of publicity for the Cardiff Indian Food Week, so we are entertained by a number of photos of 'Dic Sion Dafydd' and other Crachach ''Tikka Taffs'' with their snouts in the trough , so to speak! The Cardiff Indian Food Fesival is by the way organised by a Berwyn Rowlands, surely this is not the same BR as BR of Aberystwyth, then Cardiff Welsh Film Festival Fame, is it? some one let me know ok!. Whatever, or rather whom ever, this BR co - owns THE FESTIVALS COMPANY, a Cardiff based events management company. So it's not Mr Producer ''Stiffone Parry'' this time, then?
.
.
After reading three pages of posh nosh shite we finnaly get to find out some hot facts about Mr Machiavelli Cymru 'Dic Sion Dafydd'. But I don't think you really care, the important news is where the ''Scumbag'' likes to feed his face; The North Bali House in Llanwrst, South Bengal Brassiere and Mango House in Caerdydd. OK! now you know where to get some good ''Crachach Curries'', and please, if you eating there and 'Dic Sion Dafydd' turns up, remember the Curry House Plot, remind him? A little bird tells me that after he has eat is ''Tikka Taff Crachach Curry'', there is nothing the old swinger (from left to right) likes better than hanging around the Cameo Club, THE CAMEO CLUB It’s the most exciting location in Cardiff for business or relaxation with ... You will find the Cameo Club in the Crachach Colony of their Patria Pontcanna Patagonia aka Cymru Bach beyound Wales? Much hated by Red Revolutionary Class Warrior Udo Erasmus, who last I heard was advocating an Ian Bone type Class War march on ''The Colony'' (by way have you seen the film Zardoz, beats Marx for lessons in up and at it Workers Action against the bosses). Whatever, I do not know if Udo will organise and lead this Class War Invasion of the Pontcanna Patagonia, after all his Anti - Dewi Day Parade never came off did it, then he said it was only a wind up? So I think all we are likly to get out of Udo is his slogan and call to Workers Action>>>>>>STOP THE GENTRIFICATION OF PONTCANNA BY THE MEDIA SET! >>>>> If it is ever likely to come off, let me know.
.
Myself, I am more in favour of a March on the Assembly, but mindful of the steps there, I think we better take a look at the film The Battle Ship Pontemkin. Pay attention to the ''Steps Scene'', the film is great but I also read a great book on this significant piece of Peoples history but cannot remember the name of it. I am sure you will find plenty to read on the web about these events, what has always stuck in my mind was reading of the conviction and commitment of the Communist agitators to win over the sailors to the Revolution, we need more of that in Wales. Courage of Conviction and Commitment!

HAVE A NICE St DAVID's DAY 2008: Participate? Protest? Boycott?

.
Whatever, but do not demonstrate against the St David's Day Parade, that would just be negative and you would win over no one to any cause, certainly not any Socialist Struggle. I have suggested however, that even Socialists could participate and use to their own 'Agit - Prop' purpose? Some Radical Nationalists are using the parade to advance their calls for a Parliament with more powers whilst others are using the parade as a Platform for Welsh Independence. However, myself and I would advise Radical nationalists, Republicans and Socialists not to participate in the parade, but boycott in protest regards the organisers ''politicising'' the event in favour of PLAID.
.
This is a big mistake of the parade organisers, but after all they are Nationalists, and most of them are members of PLAID or otherwise support that party. The parade has a bit of a ''Roman Circus'' about it, in so far that the parade marches into the lap of English Lord and Devolution Dilettante Dafydd Ellis Thomas. I have no doubt that it will also be to the advantage of PLAID Minister of Heritage Rhodri Glyn Thomas, and so what you might say? Well work it out! Thus, yes I say, I hope Socialists will not demonstrate against the Dewi Day Parade but boycott and pop off down to the Assembly to hold alternative positive and practical protest about issues close to your Socialist Heart, or even make call for the setting up of a Welsh Workers Republic but do so separate of the Parade unless you are detirmined to make a positive contribution, in one way or another.
.
At same time, all that aside if anyone wishes to hold placards under the nose of Dafydd Ellis Thomas with the message TA! TA! THOMAS - English Lords Not Wanted In Wales! Also if it comes upon you heckle or boo him. why not? Other than that, well the British Army is in the City, why not demonstrate against them recruiting Welsh Lads to fight in England's foreign wars. I would have thought that this is what Plaid Left, Cymru X and CND Cymru would have been doing anyway rather than parading in memory of a misogynist old Welsh Saint? Ble Mae'r Bethan, Leanne a Jill Nawr? So much for their Socialist Republicanism???????

INSURRECTION 1831: The Forgotten Heroes, Lewis Lewis and others.

.

.
Forgotten Heroes.
.
If Dic Penderyn is martyr of the 1831 Insurrection then there is no doubt as to whom stands out as it's leader and largely ignored and forgotten hero, but not fortunately by professor Gwyn Alf Williams who in his book makes it clear that one man stands out as an heroic leader of the 1831 Insurrection. That is Lewis Lewis best known in those times and now as Lewsyn yr Heliwr, at one point in his book Gwyn Alf compares Lewsyn to Emiliano Zapata. It is as men of such standing that Lewsyn steps upon the stage of history to become hero of the 1831 Insurrection and through course of events of the Hirwaun and Merthyr Rising to his trial Lewsyn stands out in the crowd. It is perhaps no great mystery of this whole story that at the trial of those to be perceived as ring leaders, it is Lewsyn that the Establishment wants to really nail down, in such a way that he is made out of sight and out of mind. It is sad that after over 175 years since these events of 1831 that Lewis Lewis - Lewsyn yr Heliwr has been placed into the shadow corners of our history by the Welsh History establishment and others with political motives. To Welsh Establishments since 1831, of both certain Socialist and Nationalist minds, it has been more profitable to their purpose to present to the people as an example of virtue, the ''passive martyr'', Dic Penderyn. For the truth is that Lewsyn yr Heliwr was far too much percieved to be an example to a down trodden, oppressed and exploited people. Thus Lewis Lewis was to become the forgotten hero of 1831, time we did something about that! Thankfully, Sian Ifans has been working hard to this end in researching the life and times of Lewis Lewis and is now near to completing a book on Lewsyn yr Heliwr - Forgotten Hero. I have seen the draft and it's going to be an excellent and very informative read which will definatly lift Lewis Lewis out of the dark shadows of our history. But more it will make sure he his placed on a plinth along with coutless other Workers Heroes, to be remembered - NOT FORGOTTEN!
.

.
Our views today tend to be distracted by the martyrdom of Dic Penderyn, his innocence or guilt? Myself considers that there is no doubt that Lewsyn is leader of the Insurrection and as Gwyn Alf points out Lewis and others have planned an insurrection. It is thus as leader, plotter and planner of rebellion that Lewsyn is without doubt an hero to the people of the Penderyn, Hirwaun and Merthyr. Myself considers it sensible to state that if Lewsyn was hung there quite possibly would have been very violent retribution and re occurrence of rebellion in perhaps the whole of the industrial areas of 'Blaenau Morgannwg'. For such reason it is poignant that Dic Penderyn is hung given an obviously comradely relationship between the two men. There are many reasons for us to remember the story of Dic Penderyn and he being remembered as a Welsh Working Class Martyr but in this commemoration I feel the time has arrived for us to remember also the other heroes of the 1831 Insurrection, not least Lewis Lewis also known as Lewsyn yr Heliwr - Welsh Workers Hero.
.
I am very mindful of fact that 28 other heroes were shot by the soldiers in and around the Castle Inn, Merthyr Tudful on the 3 June 1831, the memory of whom need to be remembered at 12 noon in area of Castle Inn site annually on 3 June. In time hopefully a suitable memorial mural or sculpture should be placed there, not in the too distant future, I would hope. Tommy Cooper can get a fitting memorial tribute in Caerffili but Lewis Lewis, Dic Penderyn on other heroes of 1831 cannot? Something very wrong about that, want to discuss it! Do something about it! Contact me gethin.apgruffyd@ntloworld.com

In Spirit of Lewis Lewis - Lewsyn yr Heliwr - Wokers Hero, I have made this baner but a Cymdeithas Lewsyn yr Heliwr awaits greater interest, if interested contact me via email address above.

TREFTADAETH GOCH: Insurrection 1831 International Commemoration.

.
Photos following are of 1: Penderyn start of Limestone Quarries tramway trail to Hirwaun, well worth a commemorative radical ramble. 2: Hirwaun Common, easiest access for march from Hirwaun to Hirwaun Common where on 31 May 1831 the radicals raised up a Red Flag, ideal location for an annual Red Flag Raising Commemorative rally. 3: Hill above Cefn Coed, looking toward Merthyr Tudful, the workers in 1831 had seized this as a position to counter troop movement from Brecon, Swansea and Abergavenny. 4: Location of site of the Castle Hotel where on 3 June 1831 took place a massacre of 28 workers. 5: The infamous Cyfarthfa Castle, today has an 1831 Exhibition and the vast grounds are ideal for a major Insurrection 1831 International Commemoration - Socialist Festival.

It is illuminating and perhaps instructive to note that Welsh Nationalists have in the past often condemned an English Educational System for denying the Welsh access to their history. This is not exactly true, as from 1877 the Welsh were very much in charge of their own education system but the people involved being of ''Welsh Anglo - Saxon Protestant'' mind followed the English Imperial line. This ''Welsh Establishments'' had been doing since 1536 and the Protestant Reformation, in particular note Elizabeth I and the two Eisteddfod held in Caerwys which bought off the Bards. These Bards whom were not exactly ''Peoples Remembrancers'' were however in times passed capable of moving ''Patriotic Protests'' and ''National Rebellion'', following Caerwys they were to become the pet poodles of a Protestant English Crown, as were the earliest of Welsh Historians as David Powell (see material on the ''Cambrian Nation'' at http://cofcenedl.blogspot.com/) .

.
.
Whilst not surprising to me it may be surprising to you, that in the Bwrdd yr Iaith Cymraeg website/calendar of Welsh Festivals (Dathlu Cymru) there is represented: Santes Dwynwyn, Dewi Sant, Rugby, Calan May, Gwyl Ifan, The Royal Welsh, Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, Owain Glyndwr, Calan Gaeaf, Gwyl Beca and Llywelyn ap Gruffydd . Other than perhaps Rugby there is nothing that is specifically rooted to the Urban Industrial South/History and certainly there is no mention of Insurrection 1831 Hirwaun/Merthyr Rising and Lewis Lewis or Dic Penderyn. I high light Gwyl Beca because I find it odd that they place ''Beca'' in Tachwedd when of course ''Beca'' is more associated with 13 May 1839 in West Wales, perhaps more appropriate would have been the Newport Rising of 4 Tachwedd 1839, but no?
.
.
This month there has been much debate amongst Socialists regards the annual Dydd Dewi Parade in Caerdydd following on one Socialists calling upon others of Left Persausion to Demonstrate against this, he perceiving it, quite rightly to be a Nationalist inclined event. However, myself sees no reason to organise a Demonstration against what is fast becoming just a Wales/Cardiff Tourism event. So hardly worth protest against, unless of course the organisers did involve the Welsh Regiments/British Army so rumoured but denied by people associated with it's organisers. Myself suggested Republicans and Socialists boycotting the parade, but if any protest is carried out be it by Socialists or Republicans that should be a protest against English Lord Dafydd Ellis Thomas chief speaker at the event. I suggest Dydd Dewi Day Demonstrations against Devolution, to expose it for being a fraud perpetuated upon the People of Wales, I see that the Dydd Dewi Parade by being taken to the Assembly is somewhat more 'Bread & Circus' than a ''Showcase of Wales''. All this considered, I believe that Socialists rather than demonstrating against this annual Dydd Dewi event in Caerdydd should perhaps be more positive and practical. I believe Socialist ambition and attention needs to focus towards endeavour, enterprize and effort in a establishing and developing a major annual Socialist Festival which I propose be an annual long weekend INSURRECTION 1831 INTERNATIONAL COMMEMORATION of the Hirwaun/Merthyr Rising.
.

.

If interested in turning this idea into a working Initiative regards above proposal contact me at gethin.apgruffydd@ntlworld.com I doubt if a great deal could be organised this year but I do suggest that you visit Penderyn and Hirwaun over the end of May BH, it's possible to walk on the common but consult maps for proper pathways. Possibly before then, maybe over weekend of the first BH May, an informal meeting of Initiative enthusiasts could be held in Pentre Penderyn, this area is worth a Socialst Weekend break and of course there is the Lamb public House where Lewis Lewis had been imprisoned following is capture after conclusion of the 1831 Insurrection. Other than this, maybe the discussions and debates * being carried out at present and to arise in Months ahead could be organised to take place outside web forum, in Merthyr Tudful as possibly part of an annual 3 June 1831 RED COMMUNE COMMEMORATIVE CONGRESS prior to a RED PICNIC in grounds of Cyfarthfa Castle.

DEWI DAY DEBATE DEBUNKING OF WHOM & WHAT?...and decisions to be made!

.
The Call by a ''Socialist'', for a Demonstration in Cardiff on 1 March 2008 against a ''Nationalist'' Dewi day parade , has on the whole met with derision? Well at least from Welsh Nationalists, not least from ''Left Wing Nationalists'' from within the ranks of the PLAID PINK PACTERS. (not a gay ref, but an old fashioned hard left remark about left liberals). Not least from one of PLAID's Femme Fatale Left Trio, in this case Bethan Jenkins A.M. whom in her Blog (see below) counter attacked Alwyn ap Huw who in his blog MISARABLE OLD FART made attack on Socialism and in particular PLAID Socialists. Bethan in same post went on to make a passionate patriotic plea in support of Dydd Dewi Parading, speaking as a socialist she stated, she was proud to carry a Red Flag in last years Dydd Dewi Parade. Now ain't that just really radical of Bethan, but somehow I cannot see Lewsyn yr Heliwr and other 1831 Revolutionaries be very much up for marching off down to Bae Caerdydd, behind a collection of ''Welsh Celebs'' and leading PLAID personalities, plus a Tory inclined Lord Mayor of Cardiff. Bethan notes in her Blog that the last book she read of late was Ian Bones 'BASH THE RICH', I would have hoped that some of Ian Bones 'Class War' Anarchism would have rubbed off on her. sadly, this is not the case, as no where does our dear Bethan make any remark at the most singular good reason for any true Socialist not to be participating in this years parade down into old Tiger bay, and why? Well who of true Socialist Mind, Belief and Principles would allow them selves to be part of a ''Bread & Circus'' performance that concludes on steps of the so called National Assembly, where waiting to speak to the Dewi Day paraders, is none other than English Lord 'Dic Sion' Dafydd Ellis Thomas. What are you thinking of Bethan?
.

.
The problem I have with Bethan, and I guess CYMRU X as well, is that when push comes to shove these Socialists and ''Radical Republicans'', like most ''Nationalist Republicans'' never stand up to be counted. In Bethans case, I have only to refer back to the much reported matter of her running away from a TV crew who wanted to ask her, her position on Independence. Bethan that time was too fast, but the anwser lays surely in fact that she has removed from her Website & Blog, the pro - Independence sticker sent to her by Hedd ap Gwynfor of a Pro - Independence Blog campaign. I am far from the political position of Alwyn ap Huw but at least you know where he stands, he makes that obviosly clear and often in an Intellectually and Intelligent way. However, as for Bethan et al, can the same be said to be true? The above referred to matter of that 'Independence Issue'' makes me think twice but what really does it for me, is the matter of PLAID and their ENGLISH LORDS, that existing one and three more on the way? Further, of interest in her blog, is Bethan's speaking up for her self as a ''Welsh Nationalist'' and for ''Welsh Nationalism'', here I can hardly condemn her, as I have the same principles, or are they problems really? Whatever, I see where Bethan is coming from on this matter, I have the same ANXT often enough. However, I am fast coming to the oppinion that we are coming up to a line to cross, It's push comes to shove time again, time to get off the fence and realise there really is no middle road and we are fools to believe there is.

.
In the case of this years Dydd Dewi 2008 Cardiff parade, there is a decision that ''Welsh Socialists'' and those of ''Welsh Republican'' inclination have to make? Do they participate in a parade that has this year been ''politicised'' in the interest of possibly providing a circus, or rather now more a distraction from the fact that PLAID are failing to deliver the goods to satisfy Patriotic aspirations. Even their own members are getting really disappointed regards issues as the closure of Schools in Gwynedd and not seeing to it that 'Y Byd' was well funded. Many Nationalists are seeing the Cardiff Bay Coalition which has given Plaid Power in the Assembly as a price to high for failings elsewhere. All of which is only proving that Devolution is means by which a central Goverment may manage and rule all the more effeiciently and effectivelly it's outer regions and colonies. Further, by now even the most loyal PLAIDITE must realise that the Labour Party has ''Stitched em up'', that is their PLAID coalition partners down at the ''Palace of Malice'' in Ole Tiger Bay. Plaid A.M's inc Bethan no doubt are being ''hugged closely and smothered to slowly''. Plaid A.M's must be desperate to look good, appear to be up for the ''Wrap the Flag Around Me'' form of Patriotism to mask their exposed position regards referendum on increased powers for the Assembly. Not least a bit of Dewi Day ''Razz Matazz'' to again distract from fact that they have no real Princilpes or Policies regards the seeking of Welsh Independence, but the irony is that most ''Welsh Nationalists/Republicans/Socialists'' of a Plaid Persuasion are quite happy to go along with being fooled with distraction and diversions. If ever there was ever a time, it is now for Plaidwyr to show more guts and detirmination than their leaders who but seek short term gains rather regards setting out to achieve more subtantial ends. But will they? I very much doubt it, if the supposedly most radical amongst them as Bethan Jenkins, think and act as they all do? rather pathetically but ain't that the Plaid Cymru story really.
.
So what to do, regards Dydd Dewi Parade Caerdydd 2008? Certainly I oppose calls for Demonstrations against a rather harmless Patriotic event, even though I consider it to be ''Politicised'' for ends with which I could not agree with or be part of. Though, in spirit of Ian Bones Class War I am not opposed to anyone who seeks to BASH THE RICH, note B.J. that includes your ENGLISH LORDS too. I bet they are not only Welsh but Wealthy as well, out of the SAXON SHILLINGS they have pocketd over the years. However, any protest must not interfere with other peoples pleasure in parading, I mean here the Kiddies in their Welsh Costumes, and of corse the twee ''Tartan Taffies''. If your just a Welsh 'Wrap the Flag Around me' Nationalist, then by all means do your Patriotic bit for Dewi & Cymru but at least represent your Nationalist Cause and Campaign for Welsh Independence and not appear just to be just there for the eating of Welsh Cakes and wearing of leeks and ''Investiture'' Dafodils. But if your a Socialist or Republican, I cannot see how you could allow yourselves to be used by appeals to patriotism to march in a Parade, led by Pied Pipers to listen to a man who is not only an ENGLISH LORD but also a RENEGADE SOCIALIST and even a betrayer of Welsh Nationalism in which he does not believe in anyway. I am just amazed how Plaidwyr bury their heads in the sand when it comes to this BRADWR FAWR, but there that's Plaidwyr for you? what really amazes me though are the so called ''Welsh Republicans'' who are participating in this, some even helping to organise it? Whatever, if there is to be any Patriotic Protest or Dewi Day Demonstration, make it a DEMONSTRATION AGAINST DEVOLUTION or even a DEMONSTATION FOR DEVOLUTION OF POWER TO OUR COMMUNITIES as called for by Huw Lewis, Labour A.M. for Merthyr Tudful. If you intend to Protest & Demonstrate, then I suggest you do so outside the Assembly and not in or around the Dydd Dewi Parade ok! Oh Yes! lets not forget that most traditional of Slogans, which many seem to have forgotten, in both the ranks of all of the Establishment Political Paties >>>>
.

.
Lets March in the footsteps of those who during the first week in June 1831 established a Peoples Commune, near enough and that's good enough inspiration for me. Inspiration, to read in to what Huw Lewis calls for as possibly a call for ''DEVOLUTION ALL AROUND'', does that sound familiar, think Cymru Fydd! So, perhaps it's time to say, all power to Peoples Assemblies or lets call them RED COMMUNES?

A CALL FOR CLASS WAR: Socialism V Nationalism V Socialism V Nationalism.

.
.
I found the following whilst surfing around the Welsh Web Wonderland, this item I found on a Nationalist Blog: Misarable Old Fart in a post titled: And they wonder why I hate socialism! it goes on: The following quote is from a socialist who wishes to arrange a counter demonstration against the St David's day parade in Cardiff. It is typical of the socialist mindset. Read it and understand why I hate the fact that the likes of Adam Price, Bethan Jenkins and Leanne Wood have dragged Plaid Cymru into the socialist mire. Socialism and Nationalism are clearly incompatible ideologies. Plaid must decide either nationalism or socialism it can't be both!
.

The Item complained about:

.
As we know over the last few years the nationalists have stepped up their attempts to impose conformity and their bigoted ideology on our locale, they will be using St David's Day to impose the idea that Wales is a nation cosily united - rich and poor - against English oppression and waving their flags. They will be attempting to construct a 'welsh identity' that never existed and various other ideas that mystify social reality, class division and block the forming of genuine grassroots culture based on solidarity and diy principles. It's time to organise a class war counter parade stating clearly -No nations! No borders!Internationalism and solidarity! The working class has no country! Somebody Welsh on the minimum wage has more in common with an English or Polish worker than a welsh millionaire! We will create our own culture from below that is fluid and dynamic not have some fake culture based on nationalism, patriotism and other authoritarian and servile crap forced upon us.

My Comment: A Bit O.T.T. Comrade, better things to demonstrate against than against a Dewi Day Parade, like for instance Brit Army recruiters at work in Caerdydd on Dydd Dewi or is England's Foreign wars no longer a big issue with the ''Ultra Brit Left'' in Cymru. I am not totally opposed to some of your Socialist sentiments but try and get it into your head Wales was, maybe still is England's First Colony and take your socialist reasoning from this strarting point. Welsh History is not all Princes you know, the Welsh Revolt of 1294 was very much a Popular Rebellion and Glyndwr's war very much a peasants revolt. Lord Grey, Glyndwr's arch enemy had 184 Serfs at start of War but at it's conclusion he only had eight left. Whatever, yes, I am up for some Class or as I would call it, 'CRACHWAR' but may I suggest that if you want to demonstrate on Dydd Dewi why not protest against the Politicians down in Old Tiger Bay, instead of having a go at Dydd Dewi Paraders, take your 'Angry Anxt' out on the likes of ENGLISH LORD 'Dic Sion' Dafydd Elis Thomas who will be on steps of the 'Assembly of Appeasement' on Dydd Dewi to greet the Annual Saint David's Day Parade.
.
The Parade, which is sponsored in main by Cambria Magazine with the backing of the National Assembly for Wales and Cardiff Council, will start from the National Museum of Wales at 1.15pm and end at the Assembly at 2.15. Everybody is invited to join the parade or welcome the marchers when they arrive at the Assembly. If you do intend to protest keep it peaceful with some good practical and positive purpose, not least because children are about in the parade and at the Assembly to learn about Democracy and politics, as how to vote for Politicians. So. I guess it's alright to teach the children how to protest against Politicians too, after all the right to hold protest Demonstrations is also an essential requirement in any Democracy. Right on then!.
