LAST BUT NOT LEAST CONSIDER Y GWERIN OWAIN - OWAIN's FOLK:
"There is enough evidence to suggest that this last Great War of Independance 1400 - 1416 - 1422 served to liberate the peasantry as, for example, Lord Grey had 146 serfs at the start of the war and at its end he had eight. The war, I dare say, provided many of the peasantry with the opportunity to run away from bondage and yes, to join in on some pillaging. Evidence further suggests that, following the war, many of the peasantry occupied the isolated highlands and common lands with 'Tai un Nos' where they remained until post 1484 coming of Tudor to the English Throne, the murderous brutal regime of Rowland Lee was set upon Wales to purge the land of 'Bandits' The beginning of great land enclosures to amalgamate the estates of Tudor Lords in consequence prompted a "land war" which dispossessed many of the 'Y Gwerin Owain' in the 16th century. It is from this period that we have the cry of the peasantry of Caio, "Trech Gwlad Nag Arglwydd". Further, there can be little doubt that many of the "liberated peasantry" of the Glyndwr period became the "Gwerin Owain" outlaws whose descendants the "Banditti Cambria" were also much hunted down in the 16th century. Other peasants would have become mercenaries and fought on both English and French sides at Agincourt in 1415. Also note, Glyndwr's army was often referred to as the "Barefoot Welsh Doggis" hardly a description of a 'Welsh Knightly class'. All this in mind leads Welsh Remembrancers Sian Ifan and Gethin ap Gruffydd to present to our readers a new blog dedicated to memory of Owain's Folk - Who whilst the Gentry would come to despise, they the 'common folk' would keep his memory alive and cherish down through the ages - In much the same way as Mexican Peasants 'Remember Zapata'.
