FIRST WEEK JUNE 1831: BRECON TO MERTHYR - SOLDIERS SENT TO SUPPRESS THE REVOLT BUT ARE GREETED BY WORKERS AMBUSH AND WOMEN'S ROUGH MUSIC!

Down this road came the Scottish Soldiers.

At this place under the escarpment high to the right (see picture below) , they met with fierce resistence from Workers firing muskets and rolling rocks down upon the British Troops, retreat they did but for a while. Then continued on to Cefn Coed y Cymmer where they were greeted by Women who followed them into Merthyr to the sound of their 'Rough Music'.

In Merthyr, the soldiers occupied the Castle Inn to defend the Towns Iron Masters and Petite bourgeoisie lackeys, from this Inn on 3 June 1831 they fired on workers and people killing at least 26 - This was the 'Merthyr Massacre' for which there is no memorial, no plaque, no mural and now no Castle Inn remains to remind of this tragic event in Welsh Working Class Interest. Other than the annual tribute made at Plas 3 Mehefin 1831 by Red Remembrancer - Cymdeithas Lewsyn yr Heliwr - Please join us this year.

Owain and Gethin Gruffydd of Cymdeithas Lewsyn yr Heliwr in a show of solidarity greet Pobl Powys walking from Canol Cymru for the 24 May protest against Pylons at the Welsh Assembly. Later we went on to Methyr to consider this years 3 June Marthyr Massacre event.
