In recent years the Dic Penderyn Society appears to have been mpore interested in promoting the Town's Chartist history than the 1831 Rising, this of course neatly allows for then an history that follows on to Labour Party friendly history. This year DPS was back on track to commemorate the 180th anniversary of the Merthyr Rising with a three day programme of events highlight of which was a walk from Dowlais into Merthyr and a lecture by historian Joe England, himself big on Chartism and thus one would not be suprised to find that the real hero of the 1831 Merthyr Workers Insurrection Lewis Lewis aka Lewsyn yr Heliwr has again remained the forgotten key figure of this Welsh Workers Revolt. I could not make it to Joe England's lecture but I have heard him give a talk at Hirwaun in Chartist Connection and no doubt he is a very good historian if not possbly a 'Labour Establishment Reformist'. So, I am not suprised with what I gather to be the gist of Joe England's lecture as touched upon in a feature in the Merthyr Express, on the whole one could not argue with much Joe England has to say regards the Merthyr Middle Class, is that not so everywhere when they are the class with the money and increasingly hold the reins of Political Power. That Welsh Middle Class becomes in time as much a 'Labour Taffia' as the previous 'Liberal Crachach' and present 'Cultural Nationalist Cachach'. I thus cannot argue with much Joe England has to say, but simply state that to kind of make out that Merthyr Workers refrained from militancy kind of ignores the reality of an attempt to rise inb 1848 and later numerous Miners strikes as in '1935 Stay Down' and of course the miltant Merthyr women's rising against the mean test. I do not wish to lay it on thick in favour of militancy and radicalism over reformism but just point out as with remembering Tonypandy 1910 and Llanelli 1911, as Merthyr 1831 these events are signifigant stepping stones in history of the struggle of the 'Common People' and Workers in Welsh History. Talking about Welsh Workers History and the way it is to be presented in the Towns Heritage contribution to the Merthyr Regeneration project, I appeal please do not throw the '1831 Baby' out with what is percieved as the 'Dirty Water' of the Towns colourful history. Do see previous post re Austrailia's Eureka Stockade Miners Revolt and, not least lets not forget Lewis Lewis and the 'Massacred Martyrs' of Merthyr Tudful 3 June 1831.
