Have the Welsh Left gone and missed out on the anniversaries of these important events which most certainly speak to us from the past to the present, given circumstances of the moment and years ahead there is much to be learnt. I say missed because myself only recently realised that 2010 was the 75th Anniversary of major Welsh Socialist events in our history but, searching out on web for and present day recognition I draw a blank. If you are aware of otherwise do inform me, if not surly some 'left body' could put the matter right in any number of ways from Commemorations to Conferences with History Workshops. This would be in area of Llafur and Bevan Foundation or even Radical Wales, I myself am far from in position to do very much than this 'Red Cofiwn' blog work which unfortunatly has to remain more theory than practical.

The Stay Down Strikes 1935 - 75th Anniversary. Much Information on the 1935 Stay Down Strikes is scatterd accross the web, so I will have to gather material together and do a seperate post some time. Neither can I find any ref to any 75th Anniversary Commemorations in this connection, pretty bad if there is none? I have a family connection here, my grandfather was involved and took part in the Stay Down strikes, my Mam was a young teenager at this time and tells me her father would take her for walks around Merthyr to listen to 'Soap Box' orators. At time of the Stay down strikes she remembers her own Mam being worried and attending 'Back Up' protest meetings and collectiing food for the 'Stay Downers'. She remembers also photos in Merthyr Paper of the 'Stay Downers' on ending their protest and coming to the surface, unfortunatly my grandfather was killed in a colliery accident in early 50's, so being very young myself I never had chance when older of talking with him about these events.

    1. This was the age of the 'Great Depression' this drove some in the greater family to America and Canada also one Uncle went to work on Tramp Steamers, then ended up as a stoker on the Queen Mary and died of pneumonia in New York. Hard times of which Mam has told me of but I wish I had taken more time to ask much more and record her family history, do not under estimate what this generation, now very old and many in care homes have to say. Listen, learn and most important record what they have to say, sadly must add 'Before it might be too late'. This reminds me that I really got to get down to my family history, not least I have photos and postcards handed down going back at least, near enough to 1900's and few thought of writting names, place and dates on back of photos, do you with your photos today? Mam is now in care and has 'Dementia' so it is really very difficult for her to remember much at all, I now wish the 'Arrogance of Youth' and not made me so self centred. If only I had made more effort regards an interest in family history while her and my fathers memory was relativelly fresh. A terrible admission from someone who has spent most of his later adult life being a 'Welsh/Red Remembrancer', really does make me consider what is more important for me to be doing now, yes! it's got to be family history soon before I slip away and much then will be lost. So note, come November I am closing down on many of my blogging concerns, make most of them as between then and 2015/16 much will be coming down and archived away or put into publication for posterity, for what it's worth?

THE STAY DOWN STRIKES OF 1935

Lack of 75th Anniversary Commemoration could be put right in October, as in that month in 1935 there took place one of the major Stay Down Protests, taking place at Nine Mile Point Colliery when 162 miners 'Stayed Down' for 177 hours. Otherwise search web and your local history journals as there's not a fulsome account on the web of this area of Welsh History other than the South Wales Miners Library in the main see link below:
