Think of Gwynedd and one would be forgiven for thinking historically of a rural Wales, mostly concerned today with Language and Culture, in terms of history it's in main the story of Native Princes, 1282 and Investitures 1911 and 1969, not forgetting of course 'Cofia Dreweryn 1965' which for many Nationalists has become a matter of 'Time Standing Still'. It is more than interesting how rural Cultural Nationalists view and commemorate contemporary history whilst much focus is placed on Tryweryn they avoid as much as possible having to remember the 1911 or 1969 Investitures. As example they will commemorate anniversaries of Treweryn to make a patriotic political point but will refrain from doing the same regards anniversaries of Investitures of English Princes of Wales. Instead they make their rather pathetic passive point with petitions rather than patriotic protest as in Cambria Magazine, more a device to gain potential 'Subscriber Spaming' list than genuine opposition to the English Crown. Earlier this year when the English Queen visited Caernarfon and stood at Eleanors gate more or less on anniversary date of Edward and Eleanor presenting the first English Prince of Wales to pobl Gwynedd in 1284, the only protest was that made by two very brave teenage girls. Not I may add other Patriots, Bards or Poets in sight worried no doubt by risking loss of their 'Cultural' grants aka 'Saxon Silver' perhaps?
In 1911 Welsh 'Cultural Nationalism' grovelled before the new English Prince of Wales being invested in Caernarfon. It was in Southern Socialist Wales particularly amongst Merthyr and Llanelli Socialists that there was radical opposition to both Coronation and Investiture, an Investiture being pushed forward by Liberal 'Cultural Nationalist' Lloyd George. However, in 1969 under a Labour Government a 'Socialist' George Thomas was pushing an investiture on Wales whilst this time around Gwynedd had become the centre of militant opposition. A Militant opposition that had began with bomb attacks at Tryweryn and continued throughout Wales, escalating to a secret militant underground campaign against English rule but focusng more and more on the 1969 Investiture. Whilst 'On the Streets' radical nationalists in both Gwynedd and the South were active in radical patriotic protests and demonstrations which will never get the same 'establishment accepted' historical recognition as England's Black Panthers are now recieving (see future post). All this has left a legacy that informs and commemorates both a medieval history, Cofia 1282 and all that! whilst also still today 'Cofia Dreweryn' pushes Nationalist buttons, so much so they ironically welcome a Wall with a Slogan as making up for the loss of Pentre Capel Celyn. I would argue that Nationalists would be more mindfull remembering Aberfan 1966 as Tryweryn 1965 but respectfully so by personal laying of wreaths than pointless parading about. Indeed Nationalist love affair re all matters medieval as 'Cofia 1282' need no longer be of such concern as Cadw adopts Medieval Wales with the aid of £19 Million to spend on making such applicable to Tourism. Hence fourth given that most Nationalists are happy with Devolution there is no more any real patriotic point to be made by commemorating 'national heroes' in struggles for Independence. More patriotically pertinant today is remembering the struggles of the common folk in popular revolt and workers risings as in the 'Revolutionary Eighteen Thirties' down to the Stay Down Strikes of 1935 of which 2010 is the 75th, forgotten anniversary, at least that's the way it looks to me at moment.

There are many reasons why this should be so, not least as this history even though in the South is the concern of Herian, sadly they are a Southern Industrial History promotional body and can be selective in what they give attention too. As example Merthyr 1831 and Lewis Lewis or Scotch Cattle and the execution of Edward Morgan in 1835 is not high on their agenda. Thus, my going out of my way to prompt forward some 'Cofiwn Goch', in particular in the first instance in areas of Wales none too familier with remembering a more Socialist Interpretation of Welsh History in a commemorative sense. As far as Gwynedd is concerned this has not been totally ignored as much has been made of the North Wales Slate Strikes of 1900 - 03. However, there is much more worthy of rememberence and commemoration in Gwynedd as the 'Four days of Lawless' of the 'Amlwch Revolt of 1817' stand out as worthy of a major annual commemoration. Prior to this as potentially worthy of annual commemoration are the 'Enclosure Riots at Llanddeiniolen 1809' and the 'Nefyn Enclosure Riot 1812', not least The 'Battle of Cinder Hill, Rhosllanerchrurog 1830', . Perhaps Llafur needs to organise public Commemorations and Memorial Projects as well as Conferences and Work shops:

A future post will take a look at a signifigant popular revolt in North East Wales, that of 1795 in Denbigh when 500 men marched into Denbigh led by John Jones and imprisoned the magistrates. Then marched throughout the North East stoping the export of corn. It is such Welsh Socialist History as this, in these times in particular, now speak to us with inspiration and lessons, more so than the history of Princes now being made the 'objects' of Tourist desire.
